Hello everyone,

I am currently planning the installation of an IKEA METOD kitchen and would like to know which tools, based on your experience, are truly essential for assembly.

I am particularly interested in which aids, besides the basic screwdriver and hammer, really help save assembly time and prevent mistakes.

Are there any special tools you would recommend? It would also be helpful to know which tools should not be skipped, as their absence makes the assembly unnecessarily complicated.

I look forward to your tips and experiences!

In addition to the previous posts: For METOD kitchens, a cordless screwdriver is almost essential. The frame and cabinet assemblies include many screws that would be tedious to tighten by hand.

Additionally, I like to use a utility knife for removing packaging and adjusting plastic seals that some countertops require.

For aligning the cabinets, a shim plate or washers can sometimes be helpful if the floor is not perfectly level.

Not to forget: good lighting at the workspace to avoid overlooking any screws.

Cordless screwdriver with torque control, measuring tape, and spirit level are sufficient. Everything else is nice to have. Important: When measuring, it’s better to measure twice and cut once.

Having fun with IKEA kitchens is part of the experience! A cordless drill is like your best friend: reliable and always ready when you need it.

A little story: I once forgot to use the spirit level – well, the cabinet fronts ended up all crooked 😅. So honestly, never skip the spirit level.

And a utility knife saves the day more than once, as packaging can be quite a challenge. But hey, without challenges, IKEA wouldn’t be IKEA!

A simple spirit level up to 60 cm (24 inches) in length is usually sufficient; what matters most is a clearly readable vial. Expensive tools offer little added value for such a straightforward construction.

That already takes some of my worries about the spirit level away.

Could you maybe say a bit more about the clamps? I know them from other furniture assemblies, but I assume they could be particularly useful with the METOD system?

And thanks to everyone for the tips so far – very helpful!

Gladly! Clamps are very useful when assembling METOD cabinet frames, especially if you want to connect two components that are not yet fully secured.

You tighten the two parts together so they stay perfectly aligned and parallel while you work on fastening them. This helps prevent uneven gaps and crooked angles.

This is particularly helpful if you are working alone and don’t have a second person to hold the pieces.

Just make sure to use clamps with padded jaws to avoid damaging the surfaces.

Cordless screwdriver, spirit level, tape measure – these are the basic tools you truly need. For minor adjustments, I also use an Allen key, which is included with most METOD kits.

Clamps are optional but helpful, as already mentioned. For most DIY enthusiasts, this equipment is sufficient.
