Hello everyone, I have a problem with the drawers of my Ikea Metod kitchen cabinet. The drawers can be opened and closed, but there is a very unpleasant, constant squeaking noise that has gradually gotten worse over time. Additionally, some drawers no longer operate as smoothly, which I suspect is due to the runners. My question is: What proven methods are there to thoroughly repair the drawers of the Ikea Metod system and, above all, eliminate the annoying squeaking sounds? I am interested in both simple home remedies and professional solutions in case a more extensive repair becomes necessary. If anyone has had similar experiences or even step-by-step guides, I would be very grateful for any tips. Thank you!

Hello Ellipra, your issue is actually quite common with Ikea drawer systems, especially after they have been in use for some time. The squeaking often comes from insufficient lubrication of the runners or from small particles getting stuck in the guide mechanism. My advice would be to first remove the drawers completely and treat the runners with a light oil-based lubricant—but not WD-40, as it can damage plastics and attract dirt. Special silicone sprays are better suited for this. Also, be sure to check if the runners are still straight and that all screws are tight. Sometimes lightly sanding the runners with fine sandpaper helps if they are rusty or rough before applying lubricant. I hope this helps you as a first step.

That sums it up well. However, I would like to add a few more details. The Ikea Metod system often uses a combination of metal and plastic runners. When dirt or dust gets between the runners and the plastic rollers, friction occurs, which can cause squeaking.

Steps to fix this:
- Fully remove the drawer, including the lower part of the runners
- Clean with a dry, lint-free cloth, or better yet, with a mild cleaning agent
- Check the plastic rollers for cracks or wear (defective rollers should be replaced)
- Apply a suitable lubricant, preferably silicone spray or Teflon spray; avoid applying oil on plastic parts, as it can damage the surface
- Reinstall the runners and check for a secure fit

Additionally, you should check whether the runners are bent, as even slight bends can increase squeaking noise. What kind of runners exactly are you using? That could help refine the recommendations.

What type of drawer slides did you install exactly? That could help clarify the recommendations.

Thank you for the detailed response! These are the standard drawer slides with plastic rollers that Ikea typically supplies with the Metod system. I did not install any additional dampers or soft-close mechanisms; they are the basic rollers commonly found in the standard Metod drawers. The slides are metal, consisting of two parallel rails mounted inside the cabinet carcass, in which the roller moves.
I suspect that over the years, moisture and fine dust have gotten in, causing the plastic rollers to not run smoothly in some spots. At a quick glance, the rails don’t appear bent, but I’m not entirely sure about that.

When dealing with standard Metod drawers, it is really important to proceed systematically. I recommend the following approach:

- Completely remove the drawers and take out the entire sliding rail system
- Thoroughly clean all metal and plastic parts, paying close attention to every small corner and crevice
- Check for cracks or severe wear on the plastic rollers and replace them if necessary (replacement rollers can be ordered from Ikea)
- After cleaning, evenly apply silicone spray to the sliding rails, especially at the contact points with the plastic rollers
- Reinstall the drawer and gently open and close it several times to evenly distribute the lubricant

A common mistake is using WD-40 or similar products. Although they provide short-term cleaning, they can cause more dirt buildup in the long run. Therefore, I recommend using a silicone-based lubricant.

If noises persist after lubrication, it is worth inspecting the rails for bends. These should be carefully straightened if possible. If not, replacing the rail is advisable, as any deformation significantly affects smooth operation.

If you need a detailed step-by-step guide, I can provide one upon request.

Hey, that sounds like an annoying problem, but don’t get discouraged! 🙂 A bit of care and patience will get your drawers working smoothly again, and the squeaking will be gone in no time! 🎉

Last year, I completely disassembled my Metod drawers, cleaned them thoroughly, and lubricated them with silicone spray. After that, not only was it quiet, but the drawers slid almost like they were on clouds! 😄

The key is regular maintenance – don’t wait until the squeaking bothers you, but rather take the time to care for them thoroughly once a year. Good luck, you’ve got this!
