Hello everyone,

I am planning to equip the hallway in my apartment with an Ikea PAX system but am uncertain which options are best suited for this. The hallway space is limited, measuring approximately 210 cm (83 inches) wide and 150 cm (59 inches) deep, with a ceiling height of 240 cm (94 inches). It is especially important to me to have a combination of storage for coats, shoes, and bags, as well as a neat appearance that doesn’t feel too bulky.

So far, I have heard about PAX wardrobe widths of 50 cm (20 inches) and 75 cm (30 inches) and have considered different types of doors such as sliding doors and folding doors. Another question is the depth of the wardrobes – are the standard 58 cm (23 inches) or the narrower 35 cm (14 inches) versions better for a hallway?

Who among you has practical experience or tips on which PAX variants work particularly well for hallways? I am also especially interested in how you have arranged the interior (e.g., clothes rails, shelves, drawers) to make the best use of the available space.

Thanks in advance for your opinions and recommendations!

For a narrow hallway, I recommend the 35cm (14 inches) deep PAX wardrobes with sliding doors. They don’t take up too much space but still provide enough storage for coats and shoes. Inside, you should use hanging rods at the top and bottom, plus a few shelves for shoes. This way, everything stays organized.

I would question whether a depth of 35 cm (14 inches) actually provides enough storage space for bulky winter jackets or thick coats. Often, clothing gets compressed significantly when the wardrobe is too shallow. A depth of at least 58 cm (23 inches) seems more appropriate, even if it compromises the feeling of spaciousness.

Furthermore, sliding doors are indeed practical in tight hallways, but their track mechanisms are more susceptible to dirt and require regular maintenance. Folding doors could be an alternative if there is enough space for them to open.

It would also be important to consider the ceiling height more precisely: sound-absorbing elements or closed tops on wardrobes can visually lighten up the hallway or make it feel more confined. This should be taken into account.

Really exciting project! I also furnished my hallway with PAX and can highly recommend:

- 75 cm width (30 inches) for more storage space if there is enough room.
- Sliding doors are great because they don’t narrow the hallway when opened.
- Combine hanging rods for jackets with pull-out drawers for gloves, hats, and scarves.
- Use hook rails on the inside of the door for quick access to jackets.

The most important thing is to fully utilize the height – also with additional shelves or boxes. This really makes the whole hallway feel more relaxed! If the hallway isn’t very wide, I would choose the 50 cm option (20 inches) and place multiple units side by side. This keeps flexibility and order 😊
