Hello everyone,
I recently started upgrading my IKEA KALLAX shelving unit with magnetic catches to make the doors more comfortable and visually appealing. Originally, it comes with typical push-lock mechanisms, but I’m not very fond of them. Now I’m wondering: do other magnetic catches not specifically designed for KALLAX or IKEA work well in these shelves? I mean, for example, self-adhesive magnetic catches or ones with screw fittings from other manufacturers.
Has anyone had experience with this, particularly regarding whether stability, fit, and holding strength are comparable? Or are there common issues with installation, material compatibility (e.g., with wood or chipboard), or functionality due to the thickness of the KALLAX panels?
I’m looking forward to detailed opinions, including example brands or types that work well or don’t work at all. Thanks in advance!

A small addition from me: For KALLAX, magnetic catches with a holding force of about 1.5 to 3 kg (3.3 to 6.6 lbs) are ideal, as they hold the doors securely without being too tight. It is also recommended to install them with screws at the ends of the doors to better distribute the forces. Adhesive magnetic catches usually only work on clean, smooth surfaces and with more specialized adhesive methods like 3M VHB tape.
If your application involves heavier use (e.g., frequent opening), screw-mounted catches are more durable. Other products from the furniture or marine accessories sectors can be good alternatives, but it is essential to check the measurements beforehand.

If you want, I can send you some links and model names. That would be great, thanks! I’m mainly interested in models that are easy to install and require minimal fiddling during adjustment. It would also be helpful to know if you’re aware of any brands specifically recommended for wood or particleboard.

That all sounds quite technical, but that’s exactly what makes it interesting! 😊
Here’s a tip: Some magnetic catches for furniture are specifically designed for metal surfaces, so they work better if you stick a small metal plate onto the door and attach the magnet to it. This greatly improves the holding power and gives you more flexibility during installation – basically a “magnet plus counterpart” setup.
This requires a bit of extra effort, but the look stays clean and the function is perfect. Give it a try! It also makes retrofitting other magnets much easier – your KALLAX will truly become a magnet magneto 😉

I fully understand all your technical recommendations, thank you for that. For me personally, the magnetic lock was about making a simple improvement, since I wanted to use the KALLAX in a rental apartment without drilling holes.
I can only confirm that. My tip: clean the surface afterward with isopropanol to ensure better adhesive strength. One problem I encountered was that the adhesive weakens over time with high heat or humidity – so it’s best for indoor use with stable temperatures.
I appreciate that critical voices like Gofoman’s are also represented here, so that the downsides are known. Ultimately, it has to fit your individual usage profile. Thanks to everyone for the helpful tips and opinions!
