Hello everyone,
I recently started upgrading my IKEA KALLAX shelving unit with magnetic catches to make the doors more comfortable and visually appealing. Originally, it comes with typical push-lock mechanisms, but I’m not very fond of them. Now I’m wondering: do other magnetic catches not specifically designed for KALLAX or IKEA work well in these shelves? I mean, for example, self-adhesive magnetic catches or ones with screw fittings from other manufacturers.
Has anyone had experience with this, particularly regarding whether stability, fit, and holding strength are comparable? Or are there common issues with installation, material compatibility (e.g., with wood or chipboard), or functionality due to the thickness of the KALLAX panels?
I’m looking forward to detailed opinions, including example brands or types that work well or don’t work at all. Thanks in advance!

Hello odinle,
I can relate to your question because I have tried various magnetic catches in the KALLAX unit myself. Basically, many magnetic catches work well even if they are not specifically designed for KALLAX. However, there are some important considerations during installation. Most of these magnetic catches are either screw-mounted or use adhesive backs.
For screw mounting, you need suitable pre-drilled holes or at least the ability to drill them without affecting the appearance or damaging the shelf unit. Some magnetic catches are too long or too short and therefore do not fit the KALLAX doors properly. I always recommend measuring beforehand, especially the door thickness and the shelf depth.
Adhesive magnetic catches are convenient, but the adhesive strength can vary depending on the quality of the glue and the surface material—especially with particleboard, it may not hold permanently, particularly if the doors are opened and closed frequently. From my experience, it is best to choose magnetic catches that allow flexible installation and have good holding power. Brands like Southco or small furniture magnetic catches found online often work well, but it depends on the installation.
If you want, I can send you some links and model names.

Wow, this is exactly my topic! 🙂 I recently experimented a bit with KALLAX and tried different magnetic closures – and I’m really impressed with how much they improve the look without much effort!
I especially tested adhesive magnets – super easy and very practical, especially if you don’t want to drill any holes. However, they only stick well for me if I clean the surface thoroughly beforehand and ensure the adhesive area is free of dust. But hey, other magnetic closures from third-party suppliers work great otherwise!
I’ll suggest a favorite: small neodymium magnets are so strong that they reliably keep the doors closed without having to pull hard. It’s brilliant, give it a try!

Magnets catches are a nice feature, but honestly: Is it really necessary to go to such lengths with the KALLAX? The design is straightforward, and the whole modding hype around magnets seems more like an unnecessary gimmick to me.
That’s exactly the problem I see: If you don’t use the original catches, you quickly lose warranty or stability. And honestly, is a magnetic catch the holy grail, or just a luxury for the KALLAX? I think the point “just works” should be valued higher than “new cool look.” Just my opinion!

Regarding Gofoman: Sure, that point is important. But if you pay attention to basics like the appropriate magnet strength and mounting materials, many other fasteners work well. The original is often more expensive and not always better.
Better set your expectations in advance, and it will work out.
