I have been experiencing a problem for some time now with the hinges on my Ikea Pax wardrobe squeaking when I open or close the doors. The noise is quite annoying, especially since the wardrobe is located in the middle of the bedroom.
I suspect the squeaking is caused by lack of lubrication or possibly dirty hinge parts. However, I want to make sure I don’t damage anything by attempting repairs myself.
Are there any proven methods or specific lubricants that work well with Ikea Pax hinges? Do I need to remove the doors completely to do this, or can it be done while the doors are still installed?
Also, I’m curious if cleaning the hinges beforehand is necessary before applying lubricant, or if simply spraying oil is sufficient.
I look forward to your tips and experiences that can help me permanently fix this noise!

Hey Pauhaydar,
this sounds like a classic case for some hinge maintenance! I had the same issue a few months ago with my Pax wardrobe and can only recommend using a good lubricant like silicone spray – it’s great because it doesn’t attract dust and provides long-lasting lubrication.
Important: you don’t necessarily have to remove the doors. I managed to treat the hinges directly on the back of the door. Just open the doors fully and spray the lubricant sparingly and precisely onto the moving parts – best with a thin jet to avoid drips on the cabinet frame.
One more tip: before spraying, wipe the hinges with a cloth to remove dust and dirt, which noticeably improves the effect!
Good luck! You’ll definitely manage it! 😊

- Cleaning: Lightly soiled hinges can be cleaned with a dry or slightly damp cloth to remove dust and dirt.
- Lubrication: Use silicone spray or a PTFE-based lubricant, as these are non-sticky and do not attract dirt buildup.
- Application: Doors can remain installed and opened wide enough to access the hinges. Apply the lubricant sparingly to the moving parts.
- Optional: For persistent noises, completely remove the hinges, clean thoroughly, and re-lubricate.
Generally, it is not necessary to disassemble the entire cabinet as long as the doors open wide enough. Avoid using mineral oil-based oils, as they can cause the hinges to stick.
For long-lasting results, annual maintenance is recommended.

I hesitated for a long time whether to do the screwing myself. But it’s really easier than you think. Sometimes the annoyance of the squeaking pushed me to finally tackle it.
The important thing is not to put too much pressure on yourself and to proceed step by step. If you’re unsure, it’s best to wear gloves and work carefully so you don’t damage the surfaces.
If the problem isn’t completely gone after the first treatment, a second gentle application the next day often helps. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that it works quickly for you!
