Hello everyone, I recently bought and assembled a Kallax shelf from Ikea. However, the doors keep rubbing against the sides or bottom when opening and closing. I followed the instructions carefully, but the problem persists. I’m interested in understanding why these doors might be rubbing even though they should fit properly. Are there common assembly mistakes or construction variations that could cause this? Also, could material warping or manufacturing tolerances play a role? I would appreciate a detailed explanation to better understand and fix the issue myself.

A common reason why Kallax doors rub is due to production tolerances and the way the doors are fitted into the frame. Sometimes the doors are slightly warped, or the hinges are not precisely adjusted.

In principle, it is advisable to first check all the hinge screws and adjust them if necessary: the door can be moved slightly up, down, or sideways to achieve an even gap.

Adding small felt strips or rubber pads to the contact surfaces can also help if the doors rub on the edge or at the bottom. My advice would be to focus on adjusting the hinges before considering changes to the material or frame.

That's right, Gino hits the nail on the head! Sometimes the part is just a bit particular and needs some careful fine-tuning 😄.

Additionally, I would suggest keeping an eye on the humidity levels, especially with wooden doors – Kallax units are often placed in homes with varying climates, which can cause the material to expand or contract slightly, leading to rubbing at the edges.

With a small adjustment to the hinges and a bit of patience, your shelf should be closing smoothly again soon. 🙂

The rubbing of the Kallax doors can have several causes, which can be divided into three main categories:

1. Geometric Fit: The doors are pre-manufactured at the factory; however, production measurements are not always 100% precise. Due to tolerances, there can be slight dimensional deviations that cause rubbing during installation.

2. Installation Errors: Improper adjustment of the hinges or incorrect order when tightening the screws. It is important that the door is aligned so that it fits perfectly into the cabinet without stress.

3. Material Changes: Wood-based materials respond to moisture, which can lead to expansion or warping. This is especially the case if the furniture is placed in too humid or very dry environments.

In summary, a systematic check of the adjustment and the environmental conditions is the most effective way to eliminate rubbing.

I find that quite interesting – by 2022, Ikea should have this tolerance issue under control. I mean, we’re not talking about medieval craftsmanship here, but mass production with high-tech!

My theory: The sticking often results from quick, sometimes careless assembly by the buyers themselves or from an installation site that isn’t perfectly level.

Also – who really forbids Ikea from requiring slight hinge adjustments beyond the instructions? Maybe the problem is systemic: minimalist furniture designs combined with competitive pricing put limits on ease of assembly and quality control.

In the end, you pay for it with doors that easily stick because the focus is on cost efficiency.
