Hello everyone,

I have a somewhat specific issue with my Ikea Platsa drawers, and I’m hoping to get some valuable advice here.

The drawers in my Platsa cabinet have recently started sticking quite a bit, making it difficult to pull them out and push them back in. It feels like the drawer slides are not running smoothly anymore or perhaps the alignment is off. The furniture is relatively new (about 6 months old), was assembled correctly by a professional, and there has been no overloading or mechanical force applied.

I am particularly interested in:
- What are the common causes for such sticking in Platsa drawers?
- Are there proven methods to diagnose whether the problem lies with the drawer slides, the drawer front, or the mounting mechanism?
- What is the best way to fix the issue without having to replace parts immediately?
- What should I keep in mind regarding load and adjustment testing to avoid causing further damage?

I appreciate any technical guidance or practical tips that go beyond simply “tightening the screws again” and am grateful for any help!

Hello heikotar,

First of all, thank you for the detailed description of your issue. The sticking points with Ikea Platsa drawers usually lie in two areas: the sliding rails and the drawer runners.

- Sliding Rails: The guide rails are typically made of metal with ball bearings or plastic glides. A common problem is that the ball bearings get dirty or jammed, which prevents or hinders smooth sliding. Have you checked if any foreign objects are caught in the rails?

- Alignment: Since Platsa is modular, the cabinets are susceptible to slight warping. A slightly crooked installation of the drawer causes sticking. Use a spirit level or ruler to check the correct horizontal and vertical alignment of the drawer front and rail.

Procedure for diagnosing and fixing:

- Remove the drawer completely and inspect the sliding rails for dirt or visible damage to the ball bearings and rail profile.
- Gently clean the rail with a lint-free cloth and some denatured alcohol to remove stubborn dirt.
- Check the fastenings of the rail to the cabinet body. Loose or bent metal parts can cause crooked guidance.
- Reinstall the drawer. Ikea usually provides specific assembly instructions involving precise hooking with small clips. Are these properly engaged?
- Lightly lubricating the rails with a special glide lubricant can help; avoid unsuitable lubricants as they attract dust and dirt.

For the load test: Use a moderate weight (10–15 kg (22–33 lbs)) and observe the drawer’s behavior. Excessive loads quickly cause deformation.

Finally, one question: Does the sticking occur equally in all drawers or only in certain ones? This can indicate a local deformation.

I hope this explanation helps you further and clarifies some technical aspects!

In addition to bapar, I would like to organize some key points to consider when dealing with sticking Ikea Platsa drawers:

- Causes:
- Installation errors: Especially with modular systems, the rails may not be installed perfectly parallel.
- Dirt or foreign objects inside the drawer slides.
- Wear and tear: Even if the furniture is relatively new, there can be slight shifts or wear.
- Overloading the drawer.

- Diagnostic steps:
- Remove the drawer completely and visually inspect the drawer slides.
- Perform a function test with slight play to check if the rollers or sliding elements move freely.
- Check the fastening screws to ensure they are securely tightened.
- Measure the position of the slides within the cabinet to prevent any misalignment.

- Recommendations:
- Clean the slides and apply a light lubricant that does not attract dust (e.g. silicone spray).
- Tighten screws as needed to improve alignment.
- If possible, replace or reorder the slides – Ikea offers replacement parts.

Please ensure that no excessive force is used during adjustments or repairs to avoid damaging screw holes or plastic components.

It is advisable to specifically check whether only certain drawers are affected, as improper installation could be the cause.

One final question: Is the sticking the same for all the drawers or only for certain ones? That might indicate a local deformation.

The problem actually only occurs with the middle drawer out of three. The top and bottom drawers slide completely smoothly. The middle drawer sticks especially when pulling out, as if the sliding rails are rubbing at one point.

I have already done that; the sliding feels smooth at first, but after just a few centimeters, you clearly feel resistance.

I also measured the cabinet itself again and found that the carcass is slightly twisted—which is surprising after only 6 months of normal use. Possibly the sticking is caused by the rail attachment on this segment.

For the next step, I would like to know how to technically compensate a slight deformation of the carcass without compromising stability or taking the furniture apart to possibly drill new holes.

To rule out assembly errors or misalignments, do I really have to slightly adjust the position of the sliding rails?

Interesting point about the local deformation:

This is exactly the core question: Was the cabinet placed in an area with high humidity or temperature fluctuations? That could explain the wood or component deformation.

To compensate, you could try the following approaches:

- Replace the fastening materials with longer screws and washers to slightly adjust the position of the drawer runners.
- Use thin plastic or metal shims behind the runner to effectively shift the guide.

However, it is questionable whether these measures are durable in the long term, as they seem improvised and might affect the warranty.

Alternatively – if possible – you could try carefully aligning the carcass at the correct angle using clamps and temporarily securing it to immediately fix the sliding issues.

The idea of drilling new holes should be a last resort, as ready-to-assemble furniture is not necessarily designed for this and stability may be compromised.

How exactly are the screws of the runners positioned? Many screws in ready-to-assemble furniture sit in predrilled holes that leave little room for adjustment – therefore, washers are often the preferred solution.
