FedihauHello everyone, I am currently considering how to equip the doors of my IKEA Pax wardrobe with a soft-close function. Are there reliable or proven solutions to retrofit Pax doors with soft-close hinges or dampers? I would appreciate tips on compatible products and advice on whether the installation can be done technically well without affecting the appearance or functionality. Thank you in advance!
Retrofitting soft-close mechanisms on IKEA PAX doors is basically possible, but the implementation largely depends on the door type. PAX doors come in various versions (mirror doors, wooden doors, etc.), and the hinges differ accordingly. If you have classic metal hinges, IKEA itself even offers soft-close hinges as replacement parts. The problem with many retrofit solutions outside IKEA is often that the drill holes don’t match or the doors are too heavy for the small dampers.
A tip: First, check the exact model number of your doors and try to order matching hinges directly from IKEA. Alternatively, you can use soft-close dampers that attach to the cabinet carcass – these will slowly pull the door closed and cushion the closing. This option is generally more universal but requires precise adjustment during installation.

Based on my own experience, I would add that you should also pay attention to the hinge mounting on the cabinet frame. Some PAX models have special dowels or drillings, which make it difficult to use universal soft-close hinge solutions. So, if you want to retrofit, the direct replacement through IKEA is often the best option, even though the prices may be somewhat higher.
If it is a solid wood door model, third-party soft-close hinges often work less well because the door weight can be too high.

In my case with the PAX wardrobe, the doors are wooden with concealed hinges. I have the original hinges, but they don’t include soft-close functionality. So, is using the original IKEA soft-close hinge the only option, or does anyone know of a way to achieve soft-close by adding dampers mechanically to the door or furniture afterward, without replacing the hinges? If yes, how complex is that, and are there any practical experiences?

So is the IKEA Original Soft-Close hinge the only option, or does anyone know a way to add the soft-close function mechanically to the door or furniture afterward, for example by attaching dampers, without replacing the hinges? An alternative option is so-called "soft-close dampers" or "door dampers" that are mounted on the cabinet carcass and slow down the door when closing. This solution works regardless of the type of hinge. However, installation can be less smooth, as the dampers only act on the door at a single point.
Technically, installing them requires some precision in positioning the dampers; otherwise, they will not work effectively.
The original soft-close hinge solution generally offers better functionality and durability but involves modifications and possibly additional costs for replacement parts.
Conclusion: For maximum compatibility and appearance, the original hinge is preferable, but for a more cost-effective retrofit, separate dampers mounted on the carcass can also be used.
