Hello everyone,

I am planning to better organize my accessories in the living room and am considering the Ikea Platsa series for this purpose. Since I have little experience with modular furniture of this kind, I would like to know the best way to assemble and arrange PLATSA furniture for accessories such as jewelry, small decorations, and my collectibles.

Specifically, I am interested in the following points:
- How do I select the right modules to store different sizes of accessories efficiently?
- Are there any smart tips for assembly to ensure stability, even when I need many small compartments?
- Which inserts or additions from the PLATSA range work particularly well for smaller items?
- Are there any experiences with adapting the furniture to the room size and style in the living room?

I look forward to your tips and experiences! Thanks in advance.

Hello FEDEO,

Your questions about the construction and module selection for Ikea PLATSA accessories are great, as PLATSA is indeed very flexible.

1. Modules and sizes: For small accessories, I especially recommend the “drawer boxes” (the ones with two drawers) and the shelves to keep the interior organized. Larger compartments can be divided with partitions to maintain order.

2. Stability: Make sure to always install the back panel correctly. This gives the furniture significant stability. Especially with many small compartments, I advise against stacking too many different modules, and instead suggest opting for width.

3. Inserts: The PLATSA series offers various inserts, such as boxes and baskets, which are ideal for jewelry. I have had good experience with the shallow boxes that fit inside the cabinets.

4. Space and style: The modules can be arranged freely; for smaller rooms, I recommend light colors and open compartments to avoid a bulky appearance.

I hope this helps. If you like, I can also put together an example configuration for you.

That is absolutely correct, and I would like to add: especially with PLATSA, proper installation of the back panels is not only crucial for stability but also for ensuring square alignment. This is particularly important for accessories that require a stable base, as an uneven structure can cause problems.

When assembling setups for accessories, I usually proceed as follows:
- First, plan the modules on paper or using the Ikea planner, taking into account the dimensions of the accessories.
- Use the PLATSA inserts with drawers in various depths (35cm (14 inches) depths are standard, but there are also shallow drawers available).
- During assembly: Use clamps or other aids to press the panels together tightly, ensuring everything fits precisely.
- Consider the weight: Accessories can vary widely in weight; for heavy items, I recommend making the lower modules wide and sturdy.

What kind of accessories do you have? Are they mostly flat or tall items that need to be stored?

Good question! Most of my items are rather small and sometimes fragile, such as jewelry, small vases, and some collectible figures. Some of the figures are about 15-20 cm (6-8 inches) tall, so the compartments shouldn’t be too shallow. Shallow drawers for chains and rings would be ideal, but I also have some wider accessories where I might want to use adjustable shelves.

Additionally, I would like the option to store some pieces in dustproof containers or boxes since they are delicate.

Would you prefer closed cabinets or open shelves for better visibility? I want to avoid dust on the one hand, but I also don’t want the overall look to feel too bulky.

It really depends on the room and how much upkeep you want at home. Here’s a brief guide based on my experience:

- Closed cabinets protect better against dust and are ideal for delicate items or if you have children in the household.
- For jewelry and small decorations, PLATSA drawers work especially well. You can further organize them with inserts (e.g., jewelry boxes or trays made of wood or plastic).
- Open shelves feel more spacious and work well if you like to display your collection often and want quick access.
- A combination is also possible: closed units at the bottom for delicate or rarely used items, open shelves above for decorative purposes.

For assembly, I recommend:
- Sort everything and take exact measurements before starting.
- Install drawers last; this makes it easier to move the furniture during assembly.
- Follow the instructions carefully and make sure all parts are properly aligned — improper assembly can easily cause misalignment.

Summary:
- Closed = more protection
- Open = better visibility
- Combination = flexible and practical.

I would like to ask a critical question: Are you sure that PLATSA is the best choice for such small accessories? Many confuse flexibility with a kind of DIY box where, in the end, everything just ends up piled together.

Yes, that sounds good, but how practical are they for everyday use? Don’t the drawers quickly become cluttered? Aren’t there better solutions, especially for delicate items like jewelry?

And then the question about stability:

Is that really necessary for a product marketed as a DIY system? Or is it a sign of poor quality and therefore an unavoidable hassle?

My opinion: There are sturdier, more professional, and more specialized furniture options for this purpose.

Looking forward to your opinions on this.
