Hello everyone, I am planning to outfit my hallway with an Ikea PAX system for storage but am unsure which models or combinations work best for this purpose. It is important for me to have a solution that allows me to store shoes, coats, and smaller everyday items neatly and accessibly without making the hallway feel too cluttered or confusing. Since PAX is primarily designed as a bedroom wardrobe, I am looking for experience or recommendations on which built-in elements, widths, depths, or interior fittings work well in a hallway setting. Has anyone already installed a PAX system in their hallway and can offer tips on what to consider regarding storage capacity, dimensions, or appearance? Thanks in advance for your opinions and suggestions!

Hello Paimran, the PAX system is generally very flexible for hallways, especially because of the many customization options.

- A width of 50 or 75 cm (20 or 30 inches) is usually practical in hallways to avoid taking up too much space.
- For the depth, I recommend around 35 cm (14 inches), as 58 cm (23 inches) can sometimes feel too deep and take up too much room. This is especially important in narrow hallways.
- For shoes, I suggest well-arranged shelves or special shoe racks that can be ordered separately.
- For coats, rods or coat hooks are ideal, and you can use medium-height PAX wardrobes to make optimal use of the space beneath the shoe shelves.
- Doors with mirrors are also practical in hallways, saving space that would otherwise be needed for a separate mirror.

If you like, I can also share an example of how I arranged my hallway.

That’s a very important point. I would recommend paying special attention to the interior fittings. Storage options with drawers or compartments for smaller items like keys or hats help keep things organized. Baskets can also be integrated effectively.

Also, make sure the height isn’t too tall so everything remains easily reachable. A height of 201 cm (79 inches) is standard; if your hallway isn’t particularly tall, 201 cm (79 inches) would be preferable to 236 cm (93 inches).

If you want to keep the hallway small and open, choose light colors or doors with glass inserts. This will make the space feel more airy.

At first, I also had doubts about whether PAX would really be practical in the hallway, since it was originally designed for the bedroom. But after seeing a friend’s hallway with PAX, I was impressed.

One of their tips was that they installed tile flooring in the hallway, so it’s not a problem to store shoes on the PAX shelves. You should also make sure there is good ventilation to prevent the shoes from getting musty.

I can confirm that. We went with 35 cm (14 inches) depth and it’s more than enough for shoes and jackets. It also doesn’t look bulky and keeps the hallway easy to walk through.

I completely agree. Small drawers are worth their weight in gold. I personally also installed hook rails on the inside of the doors.

Maybe this is a good mix for you: rather narrow but tall, with a well-planned interior.

In summary, I recommend:
- Using PAX wardrobes with a width of 50 or 75 cm (20 or 30 inches), depending on the available space.
- Preferring a depth of 35 cm (14 inches) if the hallway is narrow.
- Planning the interior with a combination of hanging rods, shelves, and drawers.
- Choosing models with white doors or mirrored fronts to enhance light and the sense of space.
- A height of 201 cm (79 inches) for easier accessibility.

These combinations are proven and offer a good balance between storage capacity and freedom of movement in the hallway.

This way, you have a modular system that adapts to your hallway dimensions while providing tidy storage for shoes, jackets, and small items.
