lurudolfHello everyone,
I recently purchased the Ikea Platsa system for my living room and am quite satisfied with the look and flexibility overall. However, I’m unsure about the best and, above all, gentle way to clean the wood surfaces.
Since the surface is not solid wood but laminated or coated, I want to avoid using unsuitable cleaning agents that might either affect the appearance or damage the coating in the long run.
Perhaps there are people here in the forum with experience cleaning such furniture who can provide tips on how to remove dust, light dirt, and grease stains effectively without damaging the surface?
I have considered whether a slightly damp cloth with mild dish soap is sufficient or if special care products should be used.
Looking forward to an objective discussion and good cleaning advice!

for Ikea PLATSA wood surfaces, I recommend using a damp microfiber cloth and lukewarm water. If needed, add a small amount of mild dish soap, but not too much. Wring the cloth out well so that very little moisture reaches the surface. Do not use harsh cleaners or abrasive materials, as they can damage the coating.
After cleaning, wipe the surface dry to prevent moisture damage. This will help keep the furniture in good condition for a long time.

I usually use a little mild dish soap, sometimes a splash of white vinegar – it neutralizes colors and odors and is quite gentle. But never use it undiluted, always dilute it! Afterwards, wipe briefly and dry immediately, otherwise the surface will absorb the water, which doesn’t look good.
What also works well for me is occasionally applying a special furniture care oil; it gives a nice shine and protects the finish a bit. Of course, don’t do it too often, or it will become greasy.
If you have children or pets, quick and gentle cleaning is even more important – most stains come off easily with this method!

Since the surface is not solid wood but laminated or coated, I want to avoid using unsuitable products that could either damage the appearance or harm the coating over time. This is a key point with Ikea PLATSA furniture, as the surfaces are usually melamine-coated or laminated, meaning they are not suitable for heavy moisture or harsh chemicals.
For gentle cleaning, I recommend the following approach:
- First, remove loose dust with a dry microfiber cloth.
- For stains, use a slightly damp cloth with lukewarm water and a drop of mild dish soap.
- Avoid abrasive cleaners, alcohol, or solvents, as these can damage the surface.
- After cleaning, wipe the area with a dry cloth to remove any moisture.
- Avoid direct sunlight after cleaning to prevent stress on the material.
Additionally, I suggest regular maintenance using special furniture care products or waxes suitable for laminated surfaces. These provide long-lasting protection against scratches and stains.
For grease stains, a mixture of water and a small amount of vinegar (diluted) can help, but always test on an inconspicuous spot first.
Overall, caution is advised since PLATSA is not solid wood but coated. Excess moisture or strong cleaning agents can loosen or dull the laminate.
