Hello everyone,

I recently purchased several IKEA Hemnes furniture pieces, including a large sideboard and a chest of drawers. Since I take great care in maintaining my furniture, I want to clean them as gently and effectively as possible. I am particularly interested in the best cleaning methods for the painted finish of the Hemnes furniture to avoid any damage or unsightly discoloration.

Are there any specific tips or proven home remedies I can use to remove dust and dirt without harming the paint? Advice on how to prevent water stains or scratches would also be very helpful. I appreciate any recommendations, preferably with explanations on why certain methods are recommended or should be avoided.

Best regards!

Simply wipe regularly with a soft, slightly damp cloth. Do not use harsh cleaners, as they can damage the finish. Afterwards, dry the surface to prevent water spots.

Hello Dafady,

Regarding your question about cleaning the painted surfaces of IKEA Hemnes furniture, I can share some detailed advice based on experience and technical knowledge:

The Hemnes series is usually coated with a thin clear lacquer, which offers protection but is also sensitive to improper treatment. For cleaning, I would suggest the following steps:

- Regularly dust with a soft microfiber cloth, which is gentle and does not damage the surface.
- For heavier dirt, lukewarm water with a mild, pH-neutral dish soap is suitable, for example one without essential oils or harsh additives.
- The cloth should be damp, not wet, to avoid water marks. Immediately wipe dry with a dry cloth after cleaning to remove any moisture.
- Avoid abrasive cleaners, solvents, or alcohol as these can roughen or remove the lacquer.

A small additional tip: if you have stains like candle wax or adhesive residues, you can gently treat them with a soft eraser, but only very carefully and patiently.

I’m curious how much wear your furniture surfaces are subjected to. Will the furniture be placed in a high-traffic area? This can also influence how thoroughly or gently you should clean.

Thank you, TYRELL, for your detailed response! The furniture will mainly be in the living room, so the usage is fairly regular—everyday use, with occasional extra wear, for example from guests or an accidentally spilled glass. Still, I want to avoid cleaning them too often with harsh products or wiping them too wet, because I’m concerned that could damage the surface in the long run.

That sounds reasonable too. Are there any household products that work well, like vinegar water, or would that be a bad idea because of the finish? I do want to remove tougher dirt sometimes, but without ruining the furniture.

I think people tend to overestimate the care needed for these types of furniture. Sure, the IKEA Hemnes has a delicate surface, but if you worry about every little stain, it won't get any easier.

I wouldn’t recommend vinegar water – it can really damage the finish since vinegar is mildly acidic and can dull the protective layer. In my experience, warm water with a bit of mild dish soap and a soft cloth is more than enough. I would generally avoid home remedies containing acids or abrasive particles, especially on furniture with a subtle lacquer coating.

Also, honestly, these pieces aren’t antiques; they are meant to be used. Sometimes the best protection is just a bit of patience. If you clean them regularly, not much damage occurs, and worn wood actually looks nice because it gains character.

That said, if needed, you can use furniture wax or oil on varnished surfaces, but I only do that with solid wood, not lacquered finishes. Such products can often do more harm than good on lacquered surfaces.

Hello Dafady,

I’d like to join the conversation because I also own the same IKEA furniture set and have spent a lot of time learning how to care for it properly. It’s important to treat the Hemnes furniture correctly, not just because of the lacquer but also because of the material itself.

The lacquered surface is sensitive to moisture, so standing water should be avoided at all costs. Regular dusting is essential, and if you use a damp cloth, it should be only slightly moist.

What I personally find very helpful is using special furniture care wipes, which often come lightly impregnated with care agents. These create a thin protective layer and prevent dust from sticking as easily.

One more tip: Direct sunlight can gradually fade the lacquer, so make sure the furniture isn’t exposed to strong sunlight for extended periods.

If stains are particularly stubborn, the best approach is using a solution of lukewarm water with a small amount of mild dish soap, as TYRELL mentioned. Avoid any synthetic cleaners containing solvents or alcohol, as they can damage the lacquer.

I’ve also found that wiping dry works well, even if the cloth was only slightly damp. Moisture really is the biggest enemy of the lacquered surface.

If you have any other specific questions, feel free to ask.
