Hello everyone,

I’m about to move and I own several pieces of furniture from the Ikea Brimnes series, including cabinets with doors and dressers with drawers. Since these pieces are mostly made of engineered wood panels and MDF, I’m concerned about potential damage from bumped edges, scratches, or loose fittings during transport.

Therefore, I would like to ask the community for advice: How can I best protect Ikea Brimnes furniture when moving so that both the surface and functionality (e.g., hinges, drawers) are preserved? Are there proven methods, covering materials, or special preparation steps you would recommend?

I’m looking forward to concrete tips and experiences, as preserving the furniture is very important to me.

I would recommend thoroughly covering the furniture before transport, preferably with blankets or bubble wrap. If possible, remove doors and drawers or secure them with tape. It is also important to transport the furniture upright and to fasten it securely to prevent slipping.

Hello Parkuzey,

since you are asking for a good and reliable method, I have put together some structured tips for you that will make moving your Ikea Brimnes furniture easier and help prevent damage:

1. Preparation:
- Completely empty all drawers and compartments.
- If possible, unscrew doors and drawers from the furniture. This will prevent them from opening or getting damaged during transport.

2. Packing materials:
- Use blankets, old fitted sheets, or moving blankets to protect surfaces from scratches.
- For particularly delicate or visible surfaces, I recommend bubble wrap.
- Be careful not to stick adhesive tape directly onto the furniture surface, as this can damage the finish.

3. Securing:
- Secure all movable parts (drawers, doors) with stretch wrap or padding.
- Tie down the furniture in the transport vehicle so it won’t tip over or collide with other items.

4. Transport:
- Whenever possible, keep the furniture upright and avoid placing heavier objects on top.

5. After the move:
- Check the furniture for any damage before assembly and inspect screws and fittings.

Summary: Good preparation, appropriate protective materials, and secure fastening are key. Good luck with your move!

In addition to the previous suggestions, I recommend paying special attention to the following points:

- Ikea Brimnes furniture is usually made of melamine-coated particleboard. This material is relatively sensitive to scratches, so direct contact with rough surfaces should be avoided.

- For protecting edges and corners, special foam edge protectors commonly used during furniture transport are suitable. These can be easily applied by yourself and removed after the move.

- If you completely disassemble the furniture, make sure all wooden dowels and screws are securely stored and document as precisely as possible how the furniture is assembled to avoid any issues during reassembly.

- When padding, stretch wrap can also help to keep protective covers from slipping.

I consider the combination of good padding material, edge protection, and secure strapping essential to transport Brimnes furniture with minimal damage.

Although this is generally correct, I have to mention that completely disassembling Brimnes furniture is not always practical because the parts are often not very sturdy and can get damaged during disassembly.

This also assumes you have some DIY skills. If you are unsure, it’s better to keep the furniture assembled, properly cushion it, and ensure it is well protected and secured during transport.

In summary: Disassembling can prevent damage but also carries risks if you don’t know exactly what you’re doing.

I think it’s great how many detailed tips have been shared here. It also shows that protecting Brimnes furniture is a complex topic that requires preparation and care.

From my moving experience, I would add that it’s important not to get too stressed. Preparing the furniture in advance and involving friends or helpers can help avoid mistakes.

And if something does go wrong: Don’t despair, many damages can be repaired with some filler or small parts. Still, I have always made sure to protect the furniture with moving blankets, as that usually has the biggest impact.

Good luck with your move!
