Hello everyone, I am planning a barrier-free kitchen using Ikea Metod cabinets and want to set it up as practical and safe as possible. My question is: how can I install and adapt the Ikea Metod cabinets to optimize them for barrier-free cooking? I am especially interested in how to design the height, accessibility, and stability so that all elements – whether drawers, doors, or accessories – are easy to use and do not create any tripping hazards. Tips on installation, suitable accessories, and optimal planning are very welcome!

Interesting thread! But one might also ask: Why always Ikea Metod? Sure, it’s affordable and practical, but for accessible kitchens, specialized manufacturers might be the better choice – they often offer solutions that are truly ergonomic and well thought out. Still, if you stick with Metod, I would recommend thoroughly questioning the usual assembly critiques. Stability is often an issue with self-assembly, so reinforcements and possibly custom adjustments to the construction are needed. The prefabricated shelves and cabinets were not primarily designed with accessibility in mind.

That’s true, and I have already taken that into account. My budget is limited, and currently Metod offers me the best balance between cost and customizability. Custom furniture from manufacturers specializing in accessibility is simply not financially feasible for me. Therefore, a solid DIY solution is important to get as close as possible to the requirements of a barrier-free kitchen using Metod. I would appreciate any practical advice for safe and efficient installation.

During installation: be sure to securely anchor the cabinets to the wall. Use strong brackets and appropriate wall plugs, especially if the cabinets are mounted higher up. Improper fastenings pose a safety risk.

Choose edges and handles so that they pose no risk of injury and are easy to grip

I completely agree! And here’s another tip: For handles, it’s better to choose protruding, easy-to-grip designs with a soft surface rather than flat or recessed handles. This makes handling easier, especially if you don’t have much strength. The less you have to bend or stretch, the more comfortable cooking becomes 🍀.
