ᐅ How can Ikea PLATSA shelves be equipped with child safety locks?

MirahauHello everyone,
I’m planning to install an Ikea Platsa shelving system in our children’s room and want to equip it with suitable child safety features. It is important to me that the shelving unit is not only tip-proof but also that the doors and drawers are secured so children cannot easily open them. I would prefer a solution that is visually unobtrusive, as I don’t want the room to feel cluttered.
Do you have any experience or recommendations for specific child safety devices for Platsa units? What methods or products have proven effective in creating a safe environment for toddlers without compromising functionality or design? I’m especially interested in tips on anchoring, preventing tipping hazards, and avoiding unintended opening.
Thanks in advance for your advice!

Interesting question! Unfortunately, IKEA rarely provides custom-fit safety systems, especially for shelving units like PLATSA. In my opinion, most parents rely too quickly on the included wall anchors, which are often ineffective when it comes to small children who pull or climb while opening.
My advice: instead of only considering plastic latches for doors, you should firmly anchor the shelving unit to the wall—using metal brackets and strong wall plugs. Additionally, there are fairly discreet magnetic locks for doors that can be installed inside without constantly needing new handles. This usually keeps older children away sufficiently as well.
Of course, it is always a balance between usability and safety. Anyone willing to spend a bit of time and effort on handiwork can modify the shelving unit to be child-friendly— IKEA instructions on this tend to be superficial, and there is more that can be done.

reoleon471 Jun 2022 10:32I think this question is great! I also had a PLATSA in my child’s room and made the doors childproof using simple magnetic locks and adhesive strips! 😊
I found these internal magnetic locks especially helpful, as they are nearly invisible and hold very well – my little one didn’t stand a chance! The only important thing is to securely fasten the shelving unit to the wall to prevent it from tipping over.
So go ahead, with the right tricks it really works well and still looks quite clean afterward! 🎉

Regarding child safety for Ikea PLATSA shelving units, I would like to clarify the following points:
- The risk of tipping can be most effectively eliminated by securely fastening the unit to the wall using tested metal brackets and appropriate anchors.
- For securing the doors, I recommend magnetic locks (for example, from manufacturers such as Safety 1st or Häfele), which can be installed discreetly and provide a reliable closure.
- An alternative option is multi-point locks with plastic latches, which are easily accessible from the outside but difficult for children to operate.
- Make sure that the mounting options are compatible with the PLATSA front panels to avoid surface damage.
In summary: For responsible parents, wall anchoring combined with magnetic locks offers the best compromise between safety, design, and functionality.

I can only confirm what has already been said here! Use magnetic catches that are truly invisible! I installed them myself on my PLATSA shelving unit and am impressed with how sturdy it is. Wall mounting is, of course, mandatory—this is not the place for experiments!
If you need help with installation, just ask—I’m happy to assist! You just have to use the right screws, otherwise nothing will hold. Good luck to you all!
