Hello everyone,
I’m planning to install an Ikea Platsa shelving system in our children’s room and want to equip it with suitable child safety features. It is important to me that the shelving unit is not only tip-proof but also that the doors and drawers are secured so children cannot easily open them. I would prefer a solution that is visually unobtrusive, as I don’t want the room to feel cluttered.
Do you have any experience or recommendations for specific child safety devices for Platsa units? What methods or products have proven effective in creating a safe environment for toddlers without compromising functionality or design? I’m especially interested in tips on anchoring, preventing tipping hazards, and avoiding unintended opening.
Thanks in advance for your advice!

I would like to add that small Velcro straps or flexible locking tabs can also be used as child safety locks inside the drawers. This can work well, especially with Platsa drawers, as they do not sit very deep.
If the children are particularly persistent, I would recommend combining the magnetic locks with a small locking chain or an internal bolt. This way, you would have double protection! ?

Thanks for all the helpful tips so far! To summarize, I would try the following:
- Attach the PLATSA shelf to the drywall using metal anchors (toggle bolts) to reduce the risk of tipping.
- Use magnetic locks inside the doors and drawers, preferably ones that are both invisible and durable.
- Optionally, secure the drawers further with Velcro or small latches.
Do any of you have experience with how long these magnetic locks last? Do they need to be regularly checked or replaced? I’m concerned that weak points might develop over time, making the shelf suddenly unsafe.

Do they need to be regularly checked or replaced?Magnetic locks are very durable if they are high-quality and installed correctly. The magnets themselves usually lose very little holding strength over several years. The main issue can be the adhesive on the inside, which may weaken due to temperature changes or humidity.
Therefore, I recommend visual inspections every 6 months, especially to check for any loose adhesive or damage to the housing. If you use the locking system for a long time, replacing it after 3-5 years might be a good idea, depending on how much it is used. Overall, these locks are one of the most reliable methods for child safety on furniture.
