Hello everyone,

I’m planning to install an Ikea Platsa shelving system in our children’s room and want to equip it with suitable child safety features. It is important to me that the shelving unit is not only tip-proof but also that the doors and drawers are secured so children cannot easily open them. I would prefer a solution that is visually unobtrusive, as I don’t want the room to feel cluttered.

Do you have any experience or recommendations for specific child safety devices for Platsa units? What methods or products have proven effective in creating a safe environment for toddlers without compromising functionality or design? I’m especially interested in tips on anchoring, preventing tipping hazards, and avoiding unintended opening.

Thanks in advance for your advice!

A little bit of humor 😉: you can also simply secure the doors with hook-and-loop fasteners – if you enjoy constantly opening them yourself. But seriously, magnetic locks are not only very discreet but also quite reliable. Additionally, it is really important to secure the shelf against tipping over – children are often quicker than you think!

It is also essential to install the child safety lock in a way that prevents accidental damage or detachment. The quality of the materials and proper installation are crucial here.

An additional safety measure goes beyond securing the doors:

- Ensure that the shelving unit meets European standards (EN 14749 or EN 16121) for furniture stability through proper wall mounting.
- For Platsa, it is advisable to strictly follow the provided assembly instructions and use the existing drill holes for wall anchors.
- Magnetic child locks are suitable for light to medium-weight doors, can be mounted invisibly, and do not affect the appearance.
- As a supplement, self-adhesive tilt locks on the shelving feet can also be useful.

Safety must be considered comprehensively.

I would like to add that when installing child safety locks and wall mounts, it is important to always consider the weight and load of the shelving unit. PLATSA modules can vary in weight depending on the configuration with shelves, doors, or drawers.

Additionally, I recommend using child-proof drawer locks whenever possible, as these are often opened by curious children.

It is crucial to use tested products that have the necessary certification for child safety in all cases.

My advice: Instead of just considering plastic brackets for doors, you should firmly secure the shelf to the wall — using metal brackets and good wall anchors.

That sounds like a really solid approach, thanks! Are there any recommendations for wall anchors that work especially well with drywall? Because unfortunately, our child’s room doesn’t have a solid masonry wall, but drywall panels.

Make sure the mounting options are compatible with the PLATSA front to avoid surface damage.

Could you please clarify what you mean by "compatible" here? Aren’t pretty much all common wall fasteners fine as long as you use the correct screws?

Good question. Not all fasteners are ideal because PLATSA often has thin back panels or the sides aren’t as thick as in traditional cabinets. You should:

- Avoid large-area screw connectors on the sides that could split the material.
- Only install wall brackets in designated areas, such as the more stable sides or back panels.
- For drywall, cavity anchors like toggle bolts or metal anchors that provide multiple grip points are ideal.

If you want to fix the shelf to a drywall situation, plan for at least two wall anchors to distribute the weight properly. So, the important factor isn’t the type of fastener itself, but how you attach it to the furniture.

Sure, I recommend metal toggle anchors. They distribute the load well behind the board. It is important to use at least two anchors, preferably three, so the shelf has no movement when pulled by small hands.

Regular plastic drywall anchors are often too weak for this task. If you are unsure, it’s better to choose specialized drywall anchors that can withstand a pull load of over 50 kilograms (110 pounds).

One more thing: When anchoring, make sure the drill holes do not leave any visible marks on the shelf surface.
