Hello everyone,

I am currently considering attaching the doors of my IKEA KALLAX shelving unit using hinges other than the original ones. The KALLAX doors are specifically prepped for flip and simple butt hinges, but I want to try more durable or functional hinges – possibly even soft-close ones or those with a special opening angle.

I am particularly interested if anyone has experience with alternative hinges that are not from IKEA, and how to best approach the installation. What dimensions, drilling positions, or mounting options should be taken into account? Are there any tips to ensure the doors are aligned properly and open smoothly?

I would be very grateful for your experiences, recommendations, or warnings about potential issues that should be considered beforehand. Maybe there are also alternative design solutions that work well.

Thanks in advance and best regards,

I have already tried Blum hinges on my KALLAX doors. It is important to replicate the drilling holes exactly or to make new ones using the appropriate drill bit. Alternatively, small spacers can be used if the hinges are thicker. You can install soft-close mechanisms separately. Otherwise, make sure to position everything correctly so the doors do not rub.

Hello Riken41,

I have read your concern and would like to offer a structured tip:

1. Check dimensions: Standard KALLAX doors often use a 35mm (1.4 inch) drilling diameter for hinges at specific positions. If you choose different hinges with a different drilling pattern, you may need to adjust the door without compromising its load-bearing capacity.

2. Drilling: It is essential to drill at precise positions to align the door later. Use a template or markings to ensure repeatable accuracy.

3. Mounting material: KALLAX doors are usually rather thin; therefore, it is important that screws engage enough material. If the material is too thin, you can use plastic or metal anchors to secure the screws firmly.

4. Alignment: After installation, you can usually adjust the door in three directions – height, depth, and sideways. This is especially important if the hinges are not original, as tolerances may vary.

5. Damping: If your hinge does not have built-in soft-closing, there are small additional dampers from third-party suppliers that can be attached to the cabinet.

Summary: Plan for an accurate measuring phase, use templates if needed, and improve the stability of the mounting points. After installation, check the alignment and adjust if necessary.

I hope this helps. 🙂 If you specify the exact hinges, I can provide more specific advice.

I agree with that. I have also experimented with different hinges and was sometimes frustrated because I didn’t have enough stability. Especially the thin KALLAX doors are prone to issues if the screws are not inserted at the correct angle or if the drill hole diameter is too large.

What I would add is that sometimes reinforcing the door with a thin wooden panel glued on the inside helps. This thickens the material and improves screw holding without needing to replace the entire door.

That’s a good tip as well—I used small plastic pads so the doors don’t hit adjacent doors or the shelving unit later on.

Many thanks in advance for the helpful suggestions. I will try everything step by step and will get back if I have any questions.
