Hello everyone,
I am planning to modify some Ikea Metod kitchen cabinets in our home to make them safe and child-friendly. Specifically, I am interested in how to childproof the cabinets without significantly limiting their functionality. I have concerns about stability, the risk of sharp edges, possible locking mechanisms to prevent children from accessing dangerous contents, as well as mounting them at a safe height.
Does anyone have experience with adapting Metod cabinets for everyday use in homes with children? Are there proven techniques or accessories you would recommend? Which hazards should be given special attention?
I look forward to your tips and advice!

Basically, when using Ikea Metod cabinets that should be child-friendly, the following points should be considered:
- Securing with child-safe locking systems, e.g., magnetic or mechanical child locks that are easy for adults to operate
- Firmly anchoring the cabinets to the wall to prevent tipping
- Rounding off sharp edges and corners with edge protectors or self-adhesive cushions
- Avoiding heavy or dangerous items in lower cabinets if children can reach them
- Ideally, installing a soft-close system to minimize pinch and slam injuries
Additionally, it is recommended to equip low cabinets with bottom drawers and doors that are protected with the same locking system. This way, usability for children is limited, but adults can use them without problems.

Securing cabinets to the wall to prevent tippingThis is a crucial point. Especially with Metod cabinets, which have large and sometimes heavy components, wall anchoring is definitely mandatory. I also recommend checking the wall condition before installation and using appropriate anchors or screws.
Additionally, when it comes to child safety, I suggest choosing models with no visible mechanisms, so children are less likely to try to tamper with them. Regarding edge protection, I have had good experiences with soft, self-adhesive foam profiles that are easy to cut to size.
You should also consider the height of the cabinets: for very young children, at least some lower sections should be accessible but secured and free of dangerous contents. A completely inaccessible area is not always practical.
I would like to provide a more detailed overview of how to make Ikea Metod cabinets truly child-friendly. Here are the main steps:
- Stability check & securing: Always secure the cabinets against tipping, even when loaded with heavy items. Metod usually comes with wall mounting kits — installing these correctly is essential.
- Child safety locks: Choose specially tested and unobtrusive child safety locks, such as magnetic locks that are not visible from the outside and can be easily opened by adults with a key. Some systems can be easily installed inside the existing cabinet doors.
- Edge protection: Plastic or foam edge guards prevent injuries from bumps. Metal edges at the base or exposed door edges are often underestimated in terms of risk.
- Content organization: Sort items by hazard level and weight. Heavy and dangerous items should preferably be stored only in high, secured cabinets.
- Soft-close system: Use for doors and drawers to prevent children from pinching their fingers.
- Height optimization: If possible, plan for low, lockable cabinets for smaller children so they cannot access dangerous items but can still reach age-appropriate things.
In summary, I recommend a combination of structural modifications and proven safety systems to ensure comfort, design, and safety in everyday use.

I have concerns about stability, the risk of sharp edges, possible locking mechanisms to prevent children from accessing dangerous contentsTo address these concerns, I would suggest adding soft-close mechanisms for drawers and doors. This is especially helpful for children who are not yet very careful, as it reduces the risk of injuries from uncontrolled slamming.
Additionally, there are safety catches that can be installed on individual cabinet doors. These can make it significantly harder for children to open, particularly with Metod cabinets, while still allowing easy access for adults.
If you plan or build cabinets with varying heights, it is also recommended to use an attractive partition or cover for the lower sections that discourages children from climbing.
