Hello everyone, I am currently exploring different ways to creatively and functionally enhance Ikea Hemnes furniture in a DIY context. The furniture series is quite sturdy but often looks rather plain. My main question is: What DIY options are available to not only change the appearance but also improve the functionality of Hemnes furniture—such as modifications to the material, new surface treatments, or smart additional features? I am especially interested in tips on how to make the furniture more durable or better suited to individual living situations. Who has experience with self-built additions or creative refinements for Hemnes furniture? Please feel free to share ideas on tools, surface treatments, and design variations.

Basically, I recommend focusing first on surface treatment, as HEMNES furniture is made from solid pine and takes surface finishes well. Many users replace the original white or natural stain with wood stain or chalk paint to achieve a vintage or shabby-chic look. In addition to color customization, the fronts can also be personalized by attaching moldings or decorative trims.

Functionally, adding reinforcements inside dressers is a simple way to increase storage space and stability. Installing interior lighting using LED strips is also popular. For more specific adjustments, resizing can be considered, such as removing side panels to create open shelving. It is important to avoid compromising load-bearing capacity, especially with top panels.

I can completely confirm that! I painted an entire HEMNES dresser with chalk paint and then waxed it – it looks amazing and feels much higher quality! Plus, it gives you endless possibilities to really make the furniture stand out.

I also added casters to a HEMNES table to make it more mobile. This is very practical, especially if you want to use your living space flexibly. Just screwed on small locking caster wheels underneath, and it’s done.

I believe with a bit of paint and some smart additions, you can get a lot out of HEMNES – especially for relatively little money!

I think it is important not only to consider the visual changes but also to critically examine the manufacturing process and materials of the HEMNES series. The solid wood quality is good, but the surfaces are often only lightly treated, which is DIY-friendly but also increases wear and tear.

That sounds very appealing, but I would recommend thoroughly sanding off the old finish beforehand, as otherwise the paint or varnish may peel. Additionally, there is the question of whether such treatments affect the environmental friendliness of the HEMNES, which may be important to some buyers.

Furthermore, I find the suggestion of adding casters interesting but wonder how this might impact stability when the furniture is fully loaded. The balance between DIY aesthetics and functional safety should not be overlooked.

how it affects stability with fully loaded furniture

In short: With good casters and proper fastening, stability barely changes. It is important that the caster is rated for the load. Otherwise, a cross brace or base plate can help stabilize.

Regarding surfaces: Sand it down, then apply new paint or oil; this lasts well and offers protection.

As an addition, I would like to mention some practical DIY upgrades that work well with HEMNES furniture:

- Installing soft-close drawer slides to enhance ease of use
- Adding extra shelves, since many models come with only a few
- Attaching metal or leather handles or knobs to customize the appearance
- Integrating USB charging stations into nightstands or cabinets

These modifications usually require only a few basic tools, such as a cordless drill and a few files. This way, both the aesthetics and everyday functionality can be improved.
