Hello everyone,

I will soon be moving into a new rental apartment and plan to bring some Ikea Hemnes furniture with me. Since this furniture is often quite solid and not always ideally suited to rental conditions like smaller rooms, fixed wall colors, or a lack of building permits/planning permission for drilling, I’m wondering if anyone has tips on how to customize Hemnes furniture individually without major structural changes or damage to the apartment while still making practical use of it? I’m thinking, for example, of ideas such as surface treatments, alternative assembly methods, or solutions for wall mounting without drilling. Maybe there are also proven tricks to visually adapt the furniture to the room without completely rebuilding it. I would really appreciate practical advice or personal experiences.

Adhesive wall hooks or specialized adhesive mounts offer a drill-free installation option. For surfaces, you can use furniture film or matte sprays to change the color and appearance.

The most important thing in rental apartments is to avoid any permanent damage. For example, with HEMNES furniture, I recommend:

- Protecting furniture with felt pads to prevent floor scratches.
- Using tension rods or clamp holders instead of drilling for wall mounting.
- Refreshing surfaces with thin furniture or chalk paints that can be removed without leaving residues.

Make sure that any installation can be undone easily in case you move out.

Thanks for the initial tips!

I’m curious if anyone has experience using spray chalk paint or furniture films on HEMNES furniture, especially regarding the appearance and residue-free removal.

It would also be interesting to hear if anyone knows good solutions for the often somewhat wobbly back panel installation of this furniture without the need for drilling.

Based on my experience with spray chalk paints:

- They spread easily but often are not very resistant to scratches.
- You can apply a clear varnish over them, which adheres better; however, test beforehand as removal might be difficult.

For furniture film, make sure to choose a self-adhesive type that sticks well to painted surfaces and can be removed without leaving residue.

To attach backing panels without drilling, double-sided high-tack tape or specially designed hook-and-loop fasteners often help. Alternatively, there are brackets that can be clamped into the furniture frame.

You can attach back panels using adhesive tapes that are strong and leave no residue. For extra stability, I recommend corner brackets that can be clamped without drilling.
