Hello everyone,

I have an Ikea Besta cabinet with metal drawer slides that I find very practical. However, I’ve noticed that the slides sometimes become a bit stiff or squeaky, and I suspect that a thorough cleaning and maintenance could help.

My specific question is: How do I properly clean the metal drawer slides of the Ikea Besta without damaging the mechanism or the running tracks?

Are there any special cleaning products or procedures you would recommend?

I want to avoid rust formation or wear on the guide rails caused by the wrong products.

Thanks in advance for your tips!

Hi Lajohn,

great question! The metal slides on Ikea Besta units can really be a bit tricky if they get dirty or dry. I usually clean them like this:

- First, remove any loose dust and dirt with a soft cloth or brush.
- Then clean the surface with some warm water and a mild dishwashing detergent.
- Important: Avoid anything that contains a lot of moisture or harsh chemicals, as that can promote rust.
- Let it dry, then lightly spray with a silicone-based lubricant. This maintains the mechanism and ensures smooth sliding.

I find that this combination significantly reduces squeaking and sticking. And don’t worry: if you use the spray sparingly, it won’t drip or become greasy.

Good luck! 😄

I completely agree with botibo! 😊

Here’s another tip from me: When you have the rails removed, you can carefully clean them using an old toothbrush. Dust tends to accumulate especially in the small corners, which is easy to overlook.

Also, I think it’s a good idea to regularly check the metal drawer slides before they actually start sticking. A little maintenance can save a lot of trouble!

So, don’t worry too much— with some patience, you can definitely handle it well! 👍

Thank you both! This warning is especially important for me.

Could you maybe explain which specific cleaning products should be avoided? For example, I have glass cleaner that is alcohol-based and also WD-40 here. I guess I better not use WD-40, right?

And how exactly does a silicone spray work? Is it really suitable for metal tracks? I usually associate it with roller shutters or car doors, so I'm a bit unsure if it’s recommended for furniture.

I would like to address this topic in detail again, as I have personally spent a lot of time maintaining metal drawer slides.

First, about cleaning:
- As already mentioned, make sure to clean and dry thoroughly before maintenance. Fine dust or residues can otherwise cause abrasion.
- Definitely avoid using glass cleaner! These often contain alcohol or ammonia, which can damage protective coatings and promote rust.
- WD-40 may seem like a miracle product, but it is primarily a lubricant and penetrating oil. It can provide short-term lubrication but does not form a lasting protective layer and attracts dirt – not recommended for long-term use.

For maintenance, I recommend instead:
- Silicone spray based on PTFE (Teflon), which adheres well, is non-sticky, and keeps the sliding rails smooth.
- Alternatively, special lubricants designed for furniture slides (available in hardware stores, usually labeled as "furniture slide spray").

Technical note: Ikea Besta metal drawer slides usually operate on ball bearings, so it is important that these don’t get clogged with thick grease or dirty oil.

The process:

1. Pull the drawer completely out and, if possible, unlock and remove it by applying some pressure to the mechanism.
2. Carefully remove dust and coarse dirt with a fine brush.
3. Use a damp cloth (only water and possibly a few drops of mild detergent), then dry thoroughly.
4. Apply silicone spray sparingly to the ball bearings and sliding track – avoid spraying directly on metal surfaces.
5. Reinsert the drawer and open and close it several times to distribute the lubricant.

This procedure prevents rust, reduces friction, and significantly extends the lifespan of the slides.

I hope this helps with your approach! If you have any further questions, feel free to ask.

Sure, that’s completely understandable! Silicone spray creates a thin, non-sticky lubricant film that provides protection against air and moisture.

The key is: it doesn’t attract dirt, so it stays effective for a long time.

For metal ball-bearing slides, it ensures smooth gliding and prevents squeaking. This is absolutely common and recommended in the furniture industry!

Just watch the amount—better to spray sparingly and more often than too much at once. This way you avoid lubricant residue on handles or surfaces.

Also, after spraying, pull the slides out several times briefly so the lubricant distributes evenly and everything runs smoothly.

So go ahead and confidently spray those Besta rails! 🙂
