MilanpauHello everyone, I am currently planning to install IKEA Metod kitchen doors, and I noticed that some doors make quite loud or rattling noises when closing. My question is: How can I install IKEA Metod doors so that they close quietly? I’m not just referring to mounting the door itself, but also the optimal adjustment of the hinges, the use of dampers or other methods to ensure the doors close smoothly and silently without annoying sounds. Are there mechanical tricks, special tools, or perhaps alternative fittings that are better suited for this? I would appreciate as many concrete tips as possible, especially from those who have tried this themselves.

I’m not just asking about attaching the door itself, but also the optimal adjustment of the hinges, the use of dampers or other options to ensure the doors close smoothly and quietly without annoying noises. In general, the noise when closing Metod doors mostly comes from the hinges. IKEA uses self-closing hinges for Metod by default, but these are not always fully damped. The first tip is to make sure the hinges are mounted correctly and precisely adjusted. This includes:
- Installing the hinges exactly level and in the intended position.
- Adjusting the door stop using the adjustment screws so the door closes firmly without play.
Additionally, it is recommended to use extra dampers (soft-close mechanisms). IKEA offers such dampers for Metod doors as accessories, which can be retrofitted.
Alternatively, you can switch to other hinges with integrated damping that are compatible, but be careful with the drill holes and tension.
It is also important that both the door and the cabinet are properly aligned. If the door is sagging or crooked, this will cause noise.
In summary: precise adjustment plus, if needed, soft-close dampers = nearly silent closing.

Especially with budget furniture from hardware stores, manufacturing tolerances can be an issue.
I wonder if it might be worthwhile to pre-adjust the hinges using a caliper or at least a spirit level and a square to align the door really precisely. Often, the slamming is not caused by the hinges themselves but by uneven distribution of screw pressure or warping in the wood.
What experiences have others had here? Is retrofitting soft-close dampers really the only solution, or can precise adjustment avoid this?
I would like to add to the points already mentioned, especially for those who may be installing Metod doors for the first time or upgrading to soft-close hinges.
First: The hinge adjustment is done along three axes – lateral, vertical, and depth. By carefully adjusting these, you can position the door so it fits perfectly into the cabinet frame, avoiding unnecessary pressure points or friction.
Second: For cushioning when closing, there are not only the original IKEA soft-close dampers but also universal branded solutions, which are often set to be slightly stronger or gentler. These clip onto the hinge and soften the door’s closing motion.
Third: If the noise mainly comes from contact between the door and cabinet or between the door edges, I recommend applying small self-adhesive felt pads or rubber bumpers on the inside surfaces or edges to further reduce noise.
It is also helpful, after completing the adjustment, to tighten the hinge screws securely—but not too tight—using a torque wrench. This prevents losing the adjustment or damaging the wood.
Following these steps carefully will lead to a very good result.

I wonder if it might be worthwhile to pre-adjust the hinges using a caliper or at least a level and an angle tool to align the door precisely. The idea is basically good, but from my experience with IKEA Metod doors, exact adjustment with measuring tools is often impractical since the drill holes and fittings are pre-installed.
It is more important to ensure that the cabinet body is positioned correctly and free of any warping. The screw holes must also not be stripped, otherwise the hinges lose their grip and the door will rattle after extended use.
For noiseless closing, a soft-close add-on or a fully damped hinge is the most effective solution.
In general, I recommend the following:
- Check all drill holes and, if necessary, repair with wood filler
- Make sure the cabinet is stable and level
- Gently adjust the hinges
- Use a soft-close mechanism
This is the only way to achieve truly silent closing over the long term.
