Hello everyone, I am currently planning to install IKEA Metod kitchen doors, and I noticed that some doors make quite loud or rattling noises when closing. My question is: How can I install IKEA Metod doors so that they close quietly? I’m not just referring to mounting the door itself, but also the optimal adjustment of the hinges, the use of dampers or other methods to ensure the doors close smoothly and silently without annoying sounds. Are there mechanical tricks, special tools, or perhaps alternative fittings that are better suited for this? I would appreciate as many concrete tips as possible, especially from those who have tried this themselves.

Hang the door on the hinge and lightly tighten the screws. Then use the adjustment screws to ensure the door fits correctly. Attach the soft-close dampers, if available. The dampers significantly reduce noise when closing.

The felt pads are a minor issue if the door operates smoothly.

It is also helpful, after completing the adjustment, to tighten the hinge screws with a torque wrench—not too tight, but secure,

Great tip! I was really surprised how much the correct tightening of the screws makes a difference. If too loose, it rattles – if too tight, it warps. I recently installed my Metod doors exactly like this and fitted them with soft-close dampers, and since then it’s been quiet.

One more tip: When fitting the door, sometimes you have to click it firmly into place so the hinge mechanism locks in, then it goes quickly. For one of my doors, the mechanism didn’t engage properly at first, so I had to loosen it and reposition it. But that’s normal with the initial installation.

Regarding alternative fittings: There are some third-party 35mm cup hinge systems with integrated soft-close features that can be used as replacements for IKEA hinges. However, these are usually a bit more expensive and may not fit exactly one-to-one, so some adjustments might be necessary.

As for tools, no special ones are generally needed apart from a good Phillips screwdriver or a cordless drill with precise torque control. A square and a spirit level are helpful for aligning the cabinet before installation.

Measuring, adjusting, and retrofitting—that’s the recommended sequence.

That’s an important tip, thank you! I don’t have a torque wrench yet, but I’ll get one to avoid just tightening the screws by feel.

Also, I’ve been wondering if it’s possible to install soft-close dampers on the same hinges without replacing the entire hinge – that seems to be an option? Or does anyone have experience whether the original IKEA dampers perform significantly better than cheaper aftermarket dampers?

Thanks so far for all the advice!
