Hello everyone, I have a somewhat unusual question and hope to get some helpful advice here in the forum. I want to purchase an IKEA Kallax shelf unit, but the available space is too narrow for the standard width of 77cm (30 inches). Therefore, I’m interested in whether and how a Kallax shelf can be shortened without significantly compromising stability and appearance. Specifically, I’m wondering if cutting the side panels is technically feasible, which tools and methods would be recommended, and if there are any experiences regarding how this affects durability. I would appreciate any assessment on whether this is even advisable or if I should rather avoid such a project.

A Kallax shelf can generally be shortened, but due to its construction, this can be a bit tricky. It is best to adjust the side panels using a jigsaw or plunge saw, and then seal the cut edges thoroughly to prevent moisture from entering. Stability usually does not suffer if done carefully; you may need to adjust the back panel accordingly.

Regarding cutting a Kallax shelf: The side panels are made of coated chipboard with a thin plastic veneer. Cutting is possible but requires precise work and appropriate tools, such as a fine-toothed plunge saw for straight cuts and a suitable ruler or stop block. After cutting, the exposed edge should be sealed with edge banding or varnish to prevent moisture damage. Stability can be maintained if done carefully, for example by trimming the back panel to keep the shelf rigid. Alternatively, the Kallax can be compared to a custom-made unit measured exactly. From my perspective, shortening it is technically feasible, but experience with wood-based materials and the right tools is necessary.

Sometimes I wonder why IKEA stays so inflexible with their dimensions. Sure, you can shorten the shelf, but then you’re knowingly compromising the work. It’s not a DIY furniture line, it’s a mass-produced item. The coating on the cut edges will suffer, as will the stability. If your space is that tight, it makes more sense to go for a custom-made piece instead of ruining the IKEA standard. But for those who want to try: with good tools and some finishing work, the shelf will at least function, but not much more. Visually, it’s almost disrespectful.

When shortening a Kallax shelf, caution is essential to prevent splintering or moisture penetration into the wood. It is recommended to carefully cut the side panels using a fine-toothed plunge saw and then thoroughly seal all cut edges with edge banding or waterproof varnish.

I can only confirm this. I once shortened my shelf and also precisely cut the back panel to maintain stability. It is also important to clean the interior after cutting to ensure no wood chips obstruct the installation of drawers or boxes.

If you are unsure whether to do this yourself, it may be worthwhile to seek professional help in a workshop or from a carpenter to achieve the best result. A Kallax is not a high-end piece of furniture, but with proper care, it can be adapted to your needs. 🙂
