SonteHello everyone,
I recently purchased an IKEA Metod kitchen cabinet, and it is important to me to protect the surface in the long term. My question is: How can the surfaces of IKEA Metod cabinets be best protected against scratches, stains, or moisture-related damage without negatively affecting their appearance or feel?
I am thinking, for example, of special care products, protective films, or other options that help in everyday use. Tips on how to handle cleaning agents would also be very helpful, as I want to avoid damaging the surface with the wrong products.
Are there any proven methods or products you can recommend from your own experience?
Thank you in advance!

Hello Sonte,
Great that you’re taking care of protecting your Metod cabinets right away – the kitchen will definitely thank you later! 😊
I always recommend gentle, regular cleaning with lukewarm water and a little dish soap to avoid exposing the surface to anything harsh. Steel wool or abrasive scrubbing pads are a no-go; soft microfiber cloths are your best friends here.
For protection, I applied protective film shortly after installation to areas that get more wear (for example, edges), which can be easily removed if needed.
I also occasionally use furniture wax or special wood care products designed for lacquered and coated surfaces. This helps the cabinets better resist moisture and minor damage.
Interestingly, Metod surfaces also respond quite well to occasional light applications of furniture oil, as long as it’s not overdone.
A little tip: fingerprints can be easily removed with eyeglass cleaning cloths, leaving almost no residue.
Hope this helps you make good progress!

Hello Sonte,
to protect the surfaces of IKEA Metod cabinets in the long term, it is important to keep the following in mind:
- Avoid aggressive or abrasive cleaning agents, as they can damage the surface. A pH-neutral cleaner is ideal.
- Moisture should not remain on the surfaces for extended periods, as the edges are particularly vulnerable to water damage. Therefore, dry thoroughly after wiping.
- For additional protection, I recommend using transparent protective films or plastic edge guards, which can be applied discreetly.
- Microfiber cloths are suitable for daily care, as they are fine enough to be gentle on the surface.
- To prevent scratches, it is also advisable never to place heavy or rough objects directly upright against the fronts.
If you are considering cleaning products, definitely avoid those containing solvents (e.g., acetone) or abrasive particles.
These measures are based on material information for coated particleboard and are recommended as care instructions by IKEA themselves.

Hello Sonte,
I’d like to give you a simple step-by-step guide on how to protect the surfaces of Metod cabinets for the long term:
1. Before first use: Clean with a damp cloth and a mild dish detergent. Do not use abrasive cleaners.
2. Regular maintenance: Gently dust daily with a dry microfiber cloth to remove dust and dirt.
3. Stain removal: For greasy or sticky residues, use lukewarm water with a neutral cleaning agent, then dry thoroughly.
4. Long-term protection: There are transparent protective films that are easy to apply and help prevent scratches. Make sure the film is suitable for painted surfaces and does not leave adhesive residue.
5. Be careful with moisture: Especially at countertop edges or cabinet ends, ensure no water seeps in. You may dampen drip trays or splash guards but never leave areas wet permanently.
6. Avoid harsh products: Do not use strong cleaners, solvents, bleach, or alcohol as they can dull or damage the surface.
In summary: Cleanliness, avoiding mechanical stress, and the careful use of protective films are key to preserving the finish for the long term.

Make sure the film is suitable for painted surfaces and does not leave any adhesive residue. This is really important because I once made the mistake on another piece of furniture – adhesive residue is very hard to remove and the surface ends up looking different.

Oh, and a funny personal experience: I once accidentally spilled a bottle of cola on a Metod cabinet. After quickly wiping it with water and a soft cloth, there was no trace left – so don’t panic, just act fast! 😅
