Hello everyone, I am currently planning to get a new IKEA PAX wardrobe but don’t have much space available. Therefore, I am especially interested in: Which IKEA PAX wardrobe models offer a lot of storage while taking up little space?

I am mainly looking for models that provide as much storage as possible on a small footprint through clever interior organization or special dimensions. It is important to me to make good use of smaller rooms without having to sacrifice flexibility or different storage options.

Does anyone have experience with specific PAX models that are particularly suitable for this? Are there any tips on which interior fittings are useful to maximize the available space? Thanks in advance for your help!

One of the most effective options is the PAX frame with a depth of 50 cm (20 inches), which is slimmer than the standard 60 cm (24 inches) but takes up significantly less space in a small room. These models still provide enough depth for clothing rails, shelves, or drawers.

I recommend combining this with internal pull-outs and multi-component solutions, such as shelves with drawer boxes, to organize the storage space efficiently. Additionally, you can use narrow sliding doors, which do not require extra clearance space for opening—a feature that can be very practical in small rooms.

That is important, yes. 50cm (20 inches) depth plus sliding doors are great for small spaces. Also, use vertical dividers to keep everything organized.

I agree – the PAX wardrobe with a depth of 50cm (20 inches) is especially smart when there is limited space available on the sides.

Additionally, I recommend taking exact measurements and choosing versions with sliding doors, as they do not require clearance to open like hinged doors.

For the interior fittings, adjustable shelves are important – for example, tall hanging rails for coats and blouses as well as shelves for folded clothes. Also, using IKEA storage boxes greatly improves organization.

If you plan to use the wardrobe in a small bedroom or hallway, consider PAX corner solutions. They make use of awkward corners that would otherwise remain unused.

To be honest, I find the whole 50cm (20 inches) depth of the PAX range nice but somewhat suboptimal if you need to store a large amount of clothing. It would be better not to limit yourself to IKEA’s standard size but also consider other options. Why not think about combining PAX with other modular shelving systems? This way, storage space can be expanded very flexibly, even in small apartments.

The classic 50cm (20 inches) depth is space-saving, but the shallower the depth, the less storage there is for hanging clothes. Almost no one takes this into account when talking about “a lot of storage in a small space.”

In my opinion, anyone who wants to use PAX really smartly should plan for at least 60cm (24 inches) depth and score points with clever interior solutions.

I understand your point and feel the same way. I had a similar experience with my first attempt using a narrower PAX model.

What helped me was not just focusing on the depth alone but paying more attention to the internal organization and, for example, how the clothes were folded and stacked. And of course, choosing furniture sizes that still leave enough room to move around—that’s especially important if you want to use the space efficiently.

If you like, I can also share my experiences with the different heights and widths of the PAX units—maybe that will be helpful!
