Hello everyone, I unfortunately broke a corner off one of the edges of my Billy shelf. The edge is not only visually unappealing but also somewhat rough and splintered, so I would like to know the best way to repair this damaged edge. Are there specific tools, adhesives, or materials that work well for the typical MDF and veneer surface of a Billy shelf? I am also curious whether I should completely refinish the edge or if patching it with filler would be sufficient. I’m looking forward to your advice on a durable and visually pleasing repair!

Hello, it’s best to use wood filler to repair the damaged area. After that, you can lightly sand the surface and touch it up with matching paint or veneer. Done.

Hello Hananreo, your question is very well formulated and shows that you have already put some thought into it. For repairing a broken edge on a Billy shelf, I recommend dividing the process into three main steps:

1. Cleaning and preparation: Remove any loose splinters and lightly sand the edge to ensure better adhesion.

2. Filling the damaged area: You can use wood filler or MDF repair putty here. It is important to press the filler firmly and apply it in several layers if the damage is deep.

3. Surface finish: After sanding the dried filler, you should paint the edge with furniture varnish or a suitable touch-up marker. For a particularly high-quality finish, you can also apply self-adhesive edge banding if the surface area is large enough.

What exactly does the damage look like? Is the edge completely broken off or just a small chip? This could affect the repair method.

Thank you for asking. It is a larger chip on the front edge of a Billy shelf board, about 4 cm (1.6 inches) long and 1 cm (0.4 inches) deep. The surface at that spot is veneer, which is partially broken off, exposing the MDF underneath. I definitely want to avoid leaving the MDF exposed and am looking for a visually discreet repair solution.

Hello, here is a simple step-by-step guide to properly repair your broken Billy edge:

1. Remove all loose splinters and lightly sand the damaged area with fine sandpaper (grit 180-220).
2. Apply a layer of MDF filler (there are special furniture repair fillers), smoothing it out with a small spatula.
3. After drying (at least 2-3 hours), sand the surface smooth again.
4. If the surface is heavily damaged, you can cut a thin layer of wood-pattern adhesive film to size and carefully apply it.
5. Alternatively, you can use furniture paint in white or beech color (depending on your Billy model). Apply several thin coats with a fine brush, sanding lightly between layers.

Important: Work cleanly and allow enough drying time to ensure a lasting result. The edge is often underestimated, but the paint or film coating protects the MDF from moisture and further damage.

Briefly my recommendation: Use MDF filler, sand it well, and cover it with furniture adhesive foil. Cost-effective and looks neat.
