Hello everyone, I have a question that’s been on my mind lately because I recently got a kitchen with Ikea Metod countertops. I really like the surface, but I’m concerned about how to best protect it from scratches. I understand that the countertops are not solid but have a coating, which to me seems quite sensitive. My main worry is about daily cutting, placing pots down, and general everyday use where items might be left resting or moved around.

Does anyone have experience or tips on how to keep Metod countertops as undamaged as possible? What protective measures are practical and actually provide long-term benefits? Are there suitable care products or surface treatments that improve protection without affecting the appearance of the material?

I would really appreciate specific advice and maybe some practical everyday tips that you use in your own kitchens with Ikea Metod countertops.

I definitely recommend using cutting boards and avoiding direct use of sharp objects on the countertop.

Additionally, using trivets for hot pots is helpful.

Regular cleaning with mild dish soap further protects the surface.

The Ikea Metod countertops usually have a melamine resin coating, which is resistant to liquids but relatively prone to scratching.

For protection, I recommend the following points:
- Never cut directly on the countertop with knives. Use cutting boards made of wood or plastic.
- Place hot pots and pans only on heat-resistant mats to prevent thermal damage.
- Clean the surface regularly with a damp cloth and mild detergent; avoid abrasive cleaners.
- For additional protection, special sealants or care waxes designed for melamine resin surfaces can be considered, but these should be tested first on an inconspicuous area.

These measures minimize scratches and extend the lifespan of the countertop.

I can only agree with that! Make your life easier and tell your knives: Cutting boards are your new home. 😄

What I’d like to add: Felt pads or small mats under pots and pans can also help when you set them down briefly. This really keeps scratches caused by slippery cookware under control.

And honestly, a small but nice kitchen harmony develops when everything has its place and protection. 😉

I understand why there is concern about scratches, as everyone wants their kitchen to look good for a long time. In our experience, careful handling often makes more of a difference than expensive cleaning products.

What was especially important for us was to consciously avoid dragging anything heavy or sharp-edged across the countertop. These little habits really make a difference in daily use.

I’ve also noticed that even if a scratch does happen, it doesn’t ruin the overall functionality. So it’s best to stay relaxed about it. The kitchen should be enjoyable, not a place where you constantly worry about protecting every surface. That way, you can keep loving cooking.

From a technical perspective, the main issue is the melamine coating used on Ikea Metod countertops. While it is resistant to abrasion, it is relatively sensitive to mechanical damage such as scratches.

For durable protection, I recommend:
- Avoid direct impact from sharp or pointed objects (e.g., knives).
- Use protective mats or cutting boards as a barrier.
- Clean only with non-abrasive, pH-neutral cleaners.
- Optional: apply surface sealants based on wax or polymers, which should be used carefully and always tested on a small area first.

Other methods like plastic covers or films can help in the short term but are not a permanent solution and may affect the appearance.

Basically, I suggest treating the countertop as a consumable item that can last a long time with regular care but is not indestructible.
