ᐅ Buying IKEA PLATSA Online or In-Store – Advantages and Disadvantages?

LarunaHello everyone, I am currently planning to get an IKEA Platsa shelving unit and am unsure whether to order it online or buy it in-store. On one hand, I would like to see and feel the furniture in person to better assess the quality. On the other hand, it would be very convenient to have it delivered directly, especially considering the transportation. It is also important for me to pay attention to possible return policies and availability. Does anyone have experience or tips on the advantages and disadvantages of buying the IKEA Platsa online versus in-store? I am particularly interested in aspects such as delivery times, assembly assistance, return options, and whether you can get good advice from the sales staff in the store. Thanks in advance!
Here is a brief overview of your questions:
- Availability: In-store, you can see immediately if the model is in stock. Online, items may be marked as “sold out” or have longer delivery times.
- Quality: In-store, you can feel the materials and workmanship; online, you have to rely solely on pictures and descriptions.
- Delivery: Online, IKEA often delivers directly to your apartment, which is very helpful for bulky PLATSA furniture.
- Returns: Both options allow returns, but in-store you can usually exchange or choose a new item right away.
- Advice: In-store, trained staff are often available to assist you with your PLATSA project; online, support is limited to a hotline or chat.
I recommend visiting the store first to see the products and then conveniently ordering online at home once you know what you want.

The online configurator immediately shows whether everything is in stock. In a physical store, this overview is limited, and you often have to rely on the availability of items. Additionally, shipping for online orders, especially for larger PLATSA sets, can occasionally be delayed due to supply shortages. While in-store advice is helpful, I particularly recommend preparing complex configurations using the online planner.

I’m particularly interested in aspects such as delivery times, assembly assistance, return options, and whether the sales staff in the store provide good advice. Last year, I bought a PLATSA shelving unit in-store and was very pleased with the personal advice – the staff even showed me the best ways to combine certain modules. However, transporting it was quite challenging since I didn’t have a large vehicle. Next time, I would prefer to order the system online and have it delivered. The delivery time was reasonable for me at the time, about 5 working days, and the assembly instructions are well designed. Returns were also straightforward, both online and in-store. Overall, I would say that the advice in the store is excellent, but for transport and convenience, the online shop is better.
