Hello everyone, I recently assembled an IKEA Platsa shelving unit, which is supposed to be very practical and versatile. However, I noticed that the unit has some noticeable play in several areas, so it doesn’t feel completely stable and feels a bit wobbly, especially when I place lighter items on it or move it slightly. The connections between the individual modules are properly installed, all screws are tight, yet this uncomfortable looseness remains.
Does anyone have experience with how to best fix the play in the Platsa shelving system? Are there any tips for readjustment, or should I consider replacing the connectors? I want to avoid the unit being damaged over time due to too much movement.
This mainly concerns the larger modules that are stacked on top of each other. Also, I’d be interested in any methods to improve stability without compromising the design. Thanks in advance for your ideas!

I once had a similar issue with my PLATSA shelf. In my case, the problem was that some of the connecting elements, especially the dowels and cam lock screws, were not seated perfectly—even though I had assembled everything according to the instructions.
Sometimes it helps to completely disassemble the modules again and carefully clean and reassemble the connection points. Only then do you notice if the dowels might be slightly misaligned or too loose.
If you’ve already tightened all the screws and still feel some play, using a suitable wood glue on the dowel joints could help—of course, applied sparingly and so that it can be undone later.
I’m keeping my fingers crossed that your shelf will feel stable soon!

Then you can use small wooden wedges or washers to minimize any play.
If that doesn't help, attaching brackets to reinforce the connection can also be useful.

praWarre6929 May 2022 12:22Hey Noomi36, your problem sounds really frustrating! 😅 But hey, some furniture just needs a little extra care and attention.
What I learned with my PLATSA: The units should be perfectly level when stacked. Sometimes the floors are a bit uneven or the back panel isn’t installed precisely.
My advice:
- Push the shelving unit against the wall and check if the floor is really 100% flat.
- If it’s not, you can slide small furniture pads under one side to improve stability.
- The back panel shouldn’t be loose either, as it provides stability.
And a casual tip: drink some coffee and be patient, the assembly will definitely work out! ☕😉

I had the same problem with my PLATSA shelf unit. In my case, it was because I hadn’t secured the back panel properly.
I can confirm that; taking it apart and carefully reassembling the connections worked wonders for me. 😊
I also placed some rubber pads underneath, which makes the shelf more stable when moving it.

Yeah, I had the same issue, and what really helped me was reinforcing the joints with a few extra brackets on the inside! That gives the shelf some extra stability.
You can really feel the wobble go away! Just a few more screws, and the shelf won’t have a chance to shake anymore! 🙂
