Hello everyone, I have a somewhat special question regarding my IKEA Besta wall unit. Unfortunately, one of the corners of an element is damaged – specifically, the outer corner of the carcass has been chipped due to an impact, and the laminate is peeling off. My question is: What is the best way to repair this damaged corner so that it becomes stable again and looks good? Are there specific repair kits, adhesives, or techniques that work particularly well for the melamine-coated panels of the Besta series? I want to avoid replacing the entire panel or element since the damage is quite localized. Thanks in advance for your tips!

Hello Geshea, I can totally understand how annoying that is, especially when it’s just one corner and the rest is in great shape. From my experience, repair kits designed for furniture with melamine or laminate surfaces often work quite well. These kits usually include adhesives, fillers, and color pens in various shades that help to conceal the damage. However, it can be a bit fiddly, and the result won’t look brand new but should be good enough visually. Have you tried whether you can fix the corner again using wood glue or a special PVC adhesive?

Great topic, thanks for starting this! 🎉 I also had a damaged corner on my BESTA once – it’s really frustrating! What helped me was a combination of fine sandpaper, wood or furniture glue, and a repair wax stick. First, gently sand the edges, then carefully secure with glue, and finally fill small gaps with wax and polish. It looks really good afterward! Be patient, this kind of repair doesn’t happen overnight.

My recommendation for repairing the damaged corner of an IKEA BESTA:

- First, lightly sand the damaged area to improve adhesion of the glue
- Use a solvent-free plastic adhesive suitable for melamine-coated surfaces
- If there are gaps or chips, fill them with wood filler or a special repair putty designed for furniture surfaces
- After drying, sand lightly again and color-match the surface using a suitable furniture wax stick

It is important that the repair materials are compatible with the original material to avoid visible differences or further damage to the surface later on.

Wood glue is not suitable for melamine-coated surfaces. It is better to use a PVC adhesive or a special repair adhesive for plastics. After applying, press firmly and allow to dry thoroughly.

I will take a structured approach to this topic:

1. Damage assessment: Is only the surface damaged, or is the edge broken?
2. Preparation: Clean the surface and remove any loose parts.
3. Adhesive application: For BESTA melamine-coated panels, I recommend using a contact adhesive or a polyurethane (PUR) glue, as they provide strong adhesion and flexibility.
4. Securing: Clamp or firmly tape the glued corner until the adhesive is fully cured (usually 24 hours).
5. Finishing: Fill small gaps with repair filler, then sand gently.
6. Appearance: Match the color using furniture wax or a repair marker.

Common mistake: Using unsuitable adhesives or removing the clamps too quickly often causes the repair to fail!
