FegitiHello everyone,
I am currently working on better organizing my home and am particularly interested in the Ikea Platsa shelving system. My question is: Are there storage boxes that fit Ikea PLATSA shelves perfectly?
By "perfectly," I mean boxes that make the most of the exact dimensions of each shelf compartment so that they stand securely, are easy to access, and neither leave too much empty space nor get stuck.
I noticed that Ikea offers boxes for other systems, but since the PLATSA modular system has variable heights and depths, its dimensions might be different.
Does anyone know of suitable brands or products specifically designed for PLATSA, or does anyone have experience with DIY solutions?
I would be very grateful for any tips, recommendations, or information on dimensions!

your question is very well phrased and addresses a practical issue that many people encounter with PLATSA. Based on my experience, I can share the following:
- Ikea does not offer standardized boxes specifically for PLATSA, but the system has standardized internal dimensions that can serve as a useful reference.
- Many people therefore use boxes from IKEA VARIERA or SAMLA ranges, as these are partly compatible, especially the shallow versions with certain PLATSA depths (e.g. 35cm (14 inches)).
- It is important to measure carefully beforehand, particularly the internal width and height of the specific PLATSA compartment, as these can vary depending on the configuration.
One more tip: there are many third-party suppliers offering modular boxes in various sizes that can be well adapted. However, these tend to be somewhat more expensive.
If you need more precise measurements, feel free to share your dimensions, and I can give you specific recommendations.

Hello everyone,
I’m adding to this thread with a more detailed guide on how to find suitable storage boxes for Ikea PLATSA:
1. Measure: Note the exact internal dimensions of the specific PLATSA compartment. Width, depth, and height are important. Different modules have different heights, which is crucial.
2. Compare standard boxes: Some IKEA boxes, like the SAMLA series, come in various sizes and often fit well in compartments with a depth of 35cm (14 inches). VARIERA boxes are shallower but ideal for smaller compartments.
3. Third-party manufacturers: It’s worth looking beyond IKEA boxes. Many manufacturers offer modular storage boxes tailored to these shelving systems. Comparing the internal dimensions is worthwhile.
4. Custom solutions: Some users have modified their boxes with foam or dividers to prevent them from getting stuck.
5. Consider load capacity: Depending on use (e.g., heavy tools vs. light clothing), it’s important to pay attention to the box material and sturdiness.
Summary: There is no official box that perfectly fits PLATSA, but you can find suitable models from IKEA (especially SAMLA) or other brands if you know the exact measurements and compare carefully.

Are there storage boxes that fit perfectly into Ikea PLATSA shelves?I’ll answer this directly: There are no official boxes from Ikea specifically designed for PLATSA. So you either have to look for similar dimensions from other product lines or consider alternatives.

Many people use boxes from the IKEA VARIERA or SAMLA ranges because some of these are partially compatible. That’s correct. The key is to match the boxes to the internal dimensions of the specific PLATSA compartment. Another tip from me: if you’re looking for boxes with lids, try the transparent SAMLA boxes with flip lids—they often stack well and provide better protection.
You should also check the depth carefully, as PLATSA modules come in depths of 35cm (14 inches) and 40cm (16 inches). A good fit usually means a difference of no more than 0.5cm (0.2 inches).
It also depends on whether you want the boxes to stay firmly in place or have some flexibility.

If you’re looking for boxes with lids, try the SAMLA transparent type with a hinged lidExactly, such boxes not only protect against dust but also offer better stacking convenience. However, be a bit cautious with long-term use, as some plastic lids are not very durable with frequent handling.

I noticed that while Ikea offers boxes for other systems, the PLATSA modular system might have different dimensions due to its adjustable heights and depths. That’s accurate. It’s really important not to rely on standard boxes but to always measure the exact dimensions of each compartment.
I also recommend, if possible, testing the boxes in the unit before purchasing to gain practical experience.
