I have a problem with the drawers of my Ikea Besta cabinet—they are very difficult to pull out. It almost feels like the drawer slides are sticking or not installed correctly, but I followed the instructions exactly. The drawers move with a lot of resistance, sometimes you need almost muscle power to open them. The larger drawers seem to be especially affected.
I mainly use them for books and paper plates, so they are not loaded excessively heavy. I wonder if this is a mounting issue or if the slides might need lubrication or adjustment.
Does anyone have experience with Ikea Besta drawers that are hard to open? Are there any specific maintenance tips or adjustment tricks? I would appreciate any helpful advice or warnings about particular lubricants or assembly steps!

Hey! 😄
The issue with the Ikea Besta drawers is actually well known – sometimes it feels like you’re trying to open old window frames, right? 😅
Here are a few tips from my experience:
- First, check if the slides are properly aligned and nothing is blocking them.
- A little WD-40 (use sparingly and carefully!) can work wonders, but be careful not to spray directly on the wood surfaces to avoid stains later.
- It’s great that your drawers aren’t overloaded. Heavier loads can cause the slides to rub and wear quickly.
- Sometimes the rollers on the slides become slightly hardened or dusty. Cleaning them with a dry cloth helps.
In the end: gentle lubrication + thorough inspection = smooth drawers. Good luck! 🍀

Problem Analysis:
Ikea Besta drawers typically use soft-close fittings with side metal runners. If these run with difficulty, the following causes may apply:
- Incorrect installation: The guide rails are not exactly parallel or not fully engaged.
- Insufficient or old lubrication: The ball bearings or rollers may move less smoothly.
- Foreign particles (dust, small debris) in the runner.
Solution:
- Check the rail attachment and alignment using a ruler or spirit level.
- Clean the runners with a dry cloth.
- Use a silicone-based lubricant, as WD-40, being a water displacer and penetrating oil, is not optimal.
- Verify the load on the drawers (do not exceed the manufacturer’s maximum load in kilograms).
Please avoid oil-based or grease-containing products that can attract dust. A silicone-based spray is technically preferable here.

Hello chukwudi58,
I’m familiar with your issue, as I also have several Besta units with drawers. Here is a detailed step-by-step guide to help you sustainably improve the smoothness of your drawers:
- Remove the drawers: Pull the drawer fully out and reduce any load.
- Inspect the runners: Check if the runners are installed in a straight line and if any screws are loose.
- Cleaning: Remove dust, lint, or small particles from the runners and rollers. It’s best to use a lint-free cloth and, if needed, a dry brush for hard-to-reach areas.
- Lubrication: Apply a silicone-based lubricant specifically to the ball bearings or sliding rails. Be careful not to use too much to avoid excess lubricant dripping onto the drawer.
- Adjust the drawer: Besta drawers usually have adjustment screws for height and lateral positioning. Adjust the drawer so it doesn’t bind or scrape.
Important: Avoid grease or oil that remains sticky on the surface, as it attracts dust and can worsen the problem.
Could you also please specify whether your drawers already have a soft-close feature? Sometimes this can increase the force needed to open if the mechanism is not properly adjusted.

I have noticed that the pull force is noticeably higher, especially with slow movement. When I pull the drawer out quickly, it feels lighter, but you don’t want to have to tug on it every time.
Tomorrow, I plan to use a silicone-based spray and take another look at the installation of the drawer slides. Thanks also for the tip about adjusting the mechanism—I haven’t paid much attention to that so far.
Does anyone have tips on how to readjust the soft-close mechanism on Ikea Besta drawers?

I am quite familiar with the soft-close issue. Some time ago, I experienced the same feeling that the drawers were difficult to operate and opening them became a strain.
In my experience, it can help to slightly loosen the soft-close dampers directly on the slide and then tighten them again. Sometimes the mounting screws are not fully tightened, which can affect the function.
Additionally, I adjusted the drawers slightly using the front adjustment screws so they press less against the damping. This makes the drawer pull smoother.
Honestly, it’s also a matter of getting used to it, especially with heavy drawers. But I think with some patience and proper adjustment, it gets better.
Good luck, you can do it!
