Hello everyone, I have an IKEA Metod kitchen unit with standard doors without soft-close, and I would like the doors to close softly and quietly – so with a soft-close feature. What options are there to retrofit this function? I heard that there are special dampers that can be attached without having to replace the entire hinges. Are there any specific recommendations or experiences with this? It is also important to me that the installation is as simple as possible and that the appearance of the doors remains unchanged.

You can purchase soft-close dampers separately and install them on the Metod doors. Simply screw them onto the back of the door panel; usually, a complete hinge replacement is not necessary.

Soft-close hinges for Metod are the cleanest solution. If you want to replace the existing hinges, there are standard soft-close models available from Ikea itself.

There are two common options to retrofit a soft-close function on Ikea Metod doors: - Replacing the Metod hinges with Ikea soft-close models (e.g., EKERÖ). - Using external soft-close dampers, which can be easily mounted on the outside of the door or inside the cabinet. The first option is usually better because it integrates seamlessly and works more reliably. However, the second option can be more cost-effective and can be quickly implemented on existing hinges.

How securely do these external dampers hold? Do you think they will last just as well over time as the hinge soft-close? The appearance shouldn’t be affected, as the kitchen is still relatively new.

The external dampers are fine and usually stay firmly in place, but they are somewhat visible and can slightly affect the appearance. However, they offer flexibility and you don’t have to replace hinges. For most people, this is a practical solution if you want to avoid excessive drilling. My advice: just test them on one door and see if you like the look.
