Hello everyone, I recently purchased the Ikea Brimnes furniture system, especially the bed and a chest of drawers. Before using them for the first time, I would like to find out about the correct cleaning methods. My specific question is: What should I keep in mind when cleaning Ikea BRIMNES to properly care for the surface and material without risking damage? Are there any cleaning products to avoid, and what is the best way to deal with stains or dust? I would appreciate any detailed instructions and practical everyday tips.

I can only agree with KUDAISY and would like to add that you should be especially careful with the corners and edges of Brimnes furniture. Dirt tends to accumulate there, but scrubbing too hard can damage the protective coating. A damp cotton swab or a gently pressed microfiber cloth often works better than vigorous rubbing.

In addition to the previous advice, it would be useful to find out the exact material composition of BRIMNES, since different components are made with various surface finishes:

- Melamine resin-coated particleboard for the surfaces,
- MDF edges, which are often covered with veneer or foil,
- Metal parts in accessories or drawer runners.

The melamine surface is chemically quite resistant to water and mild cleaning agents, but sensitive to solvents like acetone, alcohol, or ammonia.

My tip: Avoid cleaning products containing ammonia or alcohol. Steam cleaners are also not recommended, as the steam can soften and loosen the coating.

For cleaning metal parts, use a damp cloth; if rust appears, prefer special metal cleaners, making sure to protect the wood areas.

How exactly is your BRIMNES set constructed? Are there specific areas or stains that concern you in particular?

Thank you for the detailed response. My BRIMNES mainly consists of a bed frame and a chest of drawers with sealed edges. I’m especially worried about adhesive residues from stickers that I accidentally had on the chest of drawers – they have already dried somewhat. Should I clean them differently?

For glue residues, you can gently use an eraser or a cloth dampened with some warm water. If that does not help, you can use isopropanol, but it is best to test it first in an inconspicuous spot. Avoid rubbing too hard, as this can damage the surface.

Isopropanol can be used to remove adhesive residues, but use it carefully and sparingly. Alternatively, an oil-based product, such as baby oil, sometimes removes adhesive residues more effectively without damaging the surface.

I would first try warm water and dish soap for adhesive residue. If that doesn’t work, a gentle adhesive remover or nail polish remover with a low acetone content can help, but always apply it only locally.
