Hello everyone, I recently purchased the Ikea Brimnes furniture system, especially the bed and a chest of drawers. Before using them for the first time, I would like to find out about the correct cleaning methods. My specific question is: What should I keep in mind when cleaning Ikea BRIMNES to properly care for the surface and material without risking damage? Are there any cleaning products to avoid, and what is the best way to deal with stains or dust? I would appreciate any detailed instructions and practical everyday tips.

I’m particularly worried about adhesive residue from stickers that I accidentally left on the dresser – they have already dried somewhat.

This is a common issue because adhesive leftovers can easily damage the surface. I recommend the following approach:

- First, try to gently remove the residue mechanically, for example with a plastic scraper or a credit card.
- Then clean the area with a soft cloth and warm soapy water.
- For stubborn residues, you can use a small amount of denatured alcohol or isopropyl alcohol – always test first on an inconspicuous spot!

It is very important to wipe the treated area with clean water afterwards and dry it thoroughly to prevent any leftover substances from damaging the material.

Just a quick note: For regular cleaning of Brimnes, a slightly damp microfiber cloth is usually sufficient. Only treat specific stains with targeted cleaning. Always make sure to dry the surface well afterward to prevent water spots. This way, the melamine-coated surface will stay looking good for a long time.

That’s a good point. Some users underestimate how water spots can become especially visible in the fine pores of edge banding. A tip from me: If you have stubborn water drops on the edges, it’s best to gently dab them off with kitchen paper, which absorbs efficiently without damaging the surface.

Thank you all very much! Your advice is very helpful. I especially appreciate the tips regarding adhesive residues, avoiding harsh cleaners, and being careful with the edges. One last question about maintenance: Should BRIMNES furniture never be polished or waxed? I have read that it can affect the protective coating.

Should BRIMNES furniture really never be polished or waxed?

That is correct. The surface is factory coated and does not require any additional polishing or waxing. Such maintenance products can damage or dull the surface. Keep it clean and dry – that is completely sufficient.
