Hello everyone, I am currently setting up my small home office and planning to use the IKEA Besta system for it. My question is: How can I best integrate IKEA Besta into a compact home office? Specifically, I am thinking of a combination that provides storage for documents, technology, and possibly a work surface. However, I’m still looking for the perfect idea on how to implement this in a small room in a space-saving and functional way. Maybe there are smart modular approaches or accessories that can help adapt the system optimally to limited space? I would appreciate any experience, design ideas, or tips on the right combination of Besta components – preferably with a brief explanation.

I recommend choosing a modular combination of low and tall Besta units. This way, you can create storage space for folders at the bottom and place decorative or technical equipment on top. Use doors and drawers to keep everything neatly hidden.

Besta units in a small home office – every centimeter (inch) suddenly feels much more important, doesn’t it? 😉 My tip: try using open shelves for easy access and combine them with closed compartments to keep the desk from looking cluttered. You can also create order in a playful way with adjustable shelves and small inserts without making the space look dull. A little tip: positioning a Besta unit perpendicular to the window directs natural daylight onto your workspace perfectly – boosting both your mood and workflow!

An important consideration when integrating Besta into a small home office is the flexibility offered by different module depths. IKEA provides modules that are 20 cm (8 inches) and 40 cm (16 inches) deep, which can be combined very effectively. Use the 20 cm (8 inches) deep modules on walls with limited space and complement them with 40 cm (16 inches) deep ones for folders and equipment that require more room. It is also advisable to incorporate cable management systems to ensure a tidy workspace. Visible clutter at the workstation can significantly reduce productivity.

That sounds very reasonable, as I sometimes really struggle with light distribution in my small office. For me, using a relatively low Besta cabinet as a room divider worked well. This way, the room gets a clear work zone – and at the same time, I have storage space on both sides. Although I have to admit, it took me a while to get used to not always having to walk around the cabinet. Still: from the perspective of making the most of limited space, it’s worth considering. Depending on how much freedom of movement you need, a combination of a low sideboard and a wall shelf might also be a more relaxed solution.
