Hello everyone,

I recently assembled an IKEA Brimnes wardrobe model with doors, but unfortunately the doors don’t close smoothly and feel stiff, sometimes sticking when shutting. I am particularly interested in any assembly tips or adjustment options that actually help the doors close more easily and fit better.

I have already checked that all screws are tight and the hinges are installed correctly, but this hasn’t solved the problem. Maybe you have experience with door alignment, hinge adjustments, or other details that are often overlooked?

Which assembly tips would you recommend for reliably adjusting the IKEA Brimnes doors to close properly? I look forward to helpful advice, ideally with some background on how the hinges or construction work. Thank you!

Hey Loki43,

I think it’s great that you’re addressing the issue so thoroughly! I also assembled my Brimnes, and closing the doors was a struggle for me at first 😅. What helped was readjusting the hinges completely, like this:

- First, take the doors off their hinges entirely
- Then, slightly loosen the hinge screws with a Phillips screwdriver
- Gently shift the doors until they close flush
- Tighten all screws again

You can also adjust the depth on the hinges, which really makes a difference! If the doors are sticking, check if the frame is level – even a slight unevenness in the floor can cause the doors to get stuck!

Keep at it, you’ll get it working for sure! 💪

For a systematic approach to addressing hard-to-close Brimnes doors, I recommend checking and adjusting the following points:

- Hinge inspection: IKEA Brimnes doors use concealed hinges with adjustments in three axes (height, depth, lateral offset). These can be finely tuned using a Phillips screwdriver.

- Door alignment: Incorrect angular or axis positioning can prevent the doors from closing properly.

- Cabinet and base level check: Any warped or not fully horizontal positioning of the cabinet can obstruct closing.

- Door weight assessment: Additional reinforcement or replacing hinges may need to be considered if the doors sag due to material stress or moisture.

These points should be addressed methodically to achieve an optimal closing mechanism.

Adjust door hinges according to the instructions.

Align the cabinet body, possibly using shims.

Check that the hinges remain tight on the screws.

Usually, that's all it takes.

Exactly! But sometimes people underestimate how small the adjustment needs to be. For me, just 1-2 millimeters (about 0.04-0.08 inches) of shift on the hinge plate made the doors close smoothly and easily! So don’t get discouraged, just stay patient and try carefully. And yes, occasionally a bit of sandpaper helps if the edges catch. All doable! 🙂

Hello Loki43,

I’m responding in more detail because I have had some issues with IKEA furniture myself several times.

Regarding Brimnes doors closing hard: The most common problem is usually the initial alignment of the doors. These hinges typically have three adjustment screws:

- The rear screw adjusts the door depth (forward and backward).
- The middle screw adjusts the height (up/down).
- The front screw adjusts the horizontal alignment (left/right).

My advice:

1. Remove the doors.
2. Check the cabinet with a spirit level to ensure there is no tilting or warping.
3. Fully open the hinges and make sure the mounting plates are sitting flush.
4. Reinstall the doors and make small adjustments on the screws, testing repeatedly.
5. If the doors still stick, check whether the floor is completely level or if a base is causing the furniture to tilt.

I’ve made it a habit to complete this process step by step—better to go slowly and precisely than quickly and sloppily.

If you’re interested: Sometimes it helps to lightly sand the edges of the doors with fine sandpaper at contact points if the wood feels too tight.

I hope this helps you!
