Good morning everyone, I have Malm furniture from IKEA at home that I regularly maintain, but until now I have often used alcohol-based cleaners or wipes. Since I am currently trying to avoid alcohol in household products, I would like to know: How can I effectively and gently clean Malm furniture without using alcohol-based cleaners? The surface is lacquered, so you can’t just use water and soap for everything. Are there proven alternatives that remove stains, care for the surface, and don’t leave any residue? I would appreciate any detailed recommendations—also tips on which products to avoid to prevent damaging the furniture. Thanks in advance!

Hello Hagenpa37, your concern is quite valid since many alcohol-based cleaners can cause long-term damage to painted surfaces.

As an alternative, I recommend cleaning with warm water and a mild dish soap that contains no harsh solvents. It’s best to use a lint-free, soft cloth that you slightly dampen. It is important to dry the surface afterward with a dry cloth, as standing moisture can damage the paint.

For stubborn stains, you can dilute vinegar essence heavily with water (about a 1:20 ratio) and gently treat the spots with a damp cloth as well. However, you should test this first on an inconspicuous area to ensure the paint does not become dull.

Avoid oil-based or abrasive cleaners. Also, microfiber cloths used dry are better suited for polishing rather than cleaning.

If you like, I can also recommend a small care kit designed specifically for lacquered wood furniture that is alcohol-free. Regards!

Hey, good point! I would just add that when using vinegar, it’s important to wipe the area again with clean water afterward, otherwise prolonged exposure might damage the surfaces.

Otherwise, I find that a simple wool cloth and lukewarm water often work wonders. And seriously – a little patience during cleaning pays off, as Malm furniture really appreciates gentle care. 🙂

A little tip: Sometimes a drop of olive oil on a soft cloth can help revive the surface a bit – but of course, only spot-treat and use sparingly, not as a regular maintenance method.

Hello Hagenpa37,

since you are looking for an alcohol-free method, here is a more detailed suggestion on how to safely clean your Malm furniture:

1. Preparation: First, dust the furniture with a dry, soft cloth, such as a cotton cloth, to avoid rubbing dust into the surface.

2. Gentle cleaning: Mix warm water with a few drops of mild liquid soap (preferably neutral hand soap or dishwashing liquid without alcohol or fragrances). Lightly dampen a microfiber cloth, wring it out well (damp, not wet!).

3. Cleaning: Wipe the furniture surfaces with the damp cloth following the grain of the wood; do not rub too hard.

4. Stain removal: For light grease stains or fingerprints, I recommend treating the areas first with a mixture of water and one teaspoon of baking soda in 250 ml (8.5 fl oz) water. Apply the solution with a cloth, then immediately wipe off with clear water.

5. Drying: It is important to dry the surface immediately with a dry cloth so no water remains on the finish.

What to avoid: foaming agents, abrasive cleaners, alcohol, harsh chemicals, and excessive water.

Finally, if needed, you can treat the furniture with a maintenance oil suitable for lacquered surfaces, which protects and cares without alcohol.

I hope this helps. If you need more tips or have questions – feel free to ask!
