Hello everyone,

I am currently looking into replacements and alternatives for the original Ikea Platsa furniture screws. Since it can sometimes be difficult or time-consuming to buy the exact matching screws from Ikea, I wanted to ask which alternatives you know or use that are compatible and provide the same stability and fit. It is especially important to me that the alternatives not only fit mechanically but also offer the same strength, as I am planning to modify a few modules and might rely on spare parts.

Does anyone have experience with screws from hardware stores or specific drywall screws that are comparable to those used in Platsa? I would also appreciate tips on exact dimensions, material quality, or particular types.

Thanks in advance for your help!

I would ask for M4 fine-thread hex socket screws at a well-stocked hardware store. These are usually kept in stock as replacements for furniture fittings. If the home improvement store doesn’t have any, there are also suppliers who specialize in furniture fittings. You might find the appropriate screws there.

Hello,

to find a reliable alternative to Ikea Platsa screws, you should definitely consider the following points:

- Screw type: M4 fine thread with internal hex drive (Allen key)
- Screw length: 48-50 mm (1.9-2 inches) without the head
- Head size: as close as possible to the original, otherwise the cam lock will not function properly
- Material: zinc-plated or ideally stainless steel for corrosion resistance

If no suitable screws are available locally, I recommend ordering from specialized screw suppliers or industrial supply online shops that also offer fine threads.

Alternatively, some furniture fitting manufacturers sell universal cam connections. This way, you can replace complete sets and have more flexibility with screws.

To summarize again:
- M4 fine thread with Allen key
- Check length
- Regular wood screws are not suitable here!

I had replacement problems too and proceeded this way.

Thanks for the tip about the furniture fitting suppliers! That sounds exactly like what I’m looking for.

I’ll give that a try. Does anyone have specific recommendations for reliable suppliers or shops where you can get screws with M4 fine threads, about 48 mm (2 inches) long, and a small hex socket head? Price is also a consideration, since original Ikea parts aren’t exactly cheap.

Are there affordable but good-quality alternatives worth considering, or is it better to stick with branded products, especially when it comes to furniture stability?

Reliability is crucial here, and quality varies significantly. For replacement screws for the Ikea PLATSA, especially cam lock screws, I recommend the following approach:

- Avoid very cheap generic products, as the material can be brittle.
- Branded screws from manufacturers like Würth or Fischer often fit well and are durable.
- Look for screws with fine threads, M4, length (48–50 mm) (1.9–2.0 inches), and preferably a small head (internal hex 3 mm or 4 mm).

I have purchased screws from Würth multiple times that fit exactly. The prices are reasonable, and the quality and durability are excellent.

Also important:
- Check the thread pitch with a suitable thread gauge before buying (fine thread is not the same as standard metric).

You can get advice by phone, and the dealer often has small sample packs available.

If you like, I can provide some specific part numbers that fit precisely.

Perfect, that helps me a lot! I will specifically look for M4 fine-thread screws with hex socket heads, approximately 48mm (2 inches) long at Würth.

Thanks to everyone for your concrete tips and advice; it really makes my selection much easier.

If anyone else has specific product recommendations or experience with alternative furniture connectors, I would appreciate further suggestions.
