ᐅ What to do if IKEA Hemnes screws are missing?

Hello everyone,

I recently ordered and assembled an IKEA Hemnes piece of furniture, but I found that some important screws were missing in my delivery. The specific screws in question are the long metal connectors needed to securely join the individual panels (the official term in the instructions is "metal screw with thread" or "connecting bolt").

Since I don’t want to leave the furniture incomplete or unstable, and I assume this might happen to others as well, I wanted to ask:

What do you recommend doing if screws are missing from an IKEA Hemnes?

- Should you contact IKEA directly, or are there quicker alternative solutions?
- Are there compatible replacement screws available at hardware stores that can be used?
- How do you handle possible delays due to replacement shipments?

I look forward to your tips and experiences, especially any advice on the best way to contact IKEA or whether there are certain types of screws that can be safely omitted.

Thanks in advance!

In case of doubt: send pictures of the missing screws to IKEA, request a free replacement shipment, which usually takes 1-2 weeks.

Thanks, BELLA34.

I called IKEA, and they also said I should send the item numbers and a brief description, then a package with the missing screws will be sent. The waiting time can be up to ten days, which is not ideal for me since I urgently need the furniture.

If you want to improvise temporarily, you can buy screws at a hardware store that fit exactly. M6 x 50 mm (approximately 0.24 x 2 inches) are often a standard size. However, it is important to pay attention to the material quality because with furniture like Hemnes, the connection needs to hold and must not come loose.

Another option is to take the missing screws from another piece of furniture you no longer need.

I recommend contacting IKEA customer service, but if you are handy, you can also try the second option at the same time.

Good morning,

Yesterday, I followed all the advice: I took measurements and asked at the hardware store for suitable screws. There are standard M6 fasteners available, but the length and thread type vary in some cases. I chose the fine thread version, which the Hemnes assembly instructions recommend.

Thanks also for the tip about being careful with the material. I’m using stainless steel screws with a sufficient strength rating.

The IKEA customer service has now promised the replacement screws. Until then, I will carefully secure the furniture with the screws from the hardware store and regularly check the stability.

If anyone would like a detailed guide on how to select screws for IKEA furniture, I’m happy to write a short tutorial.

Quick update: The replacement screws from IKEA arrived today.

The process with IKEA was quite straightforward, but the two-day wait was still noticeable.

I removed the temporary screws from the hardware store and installed the original ones. Everything fits perfectly and is stable now, with no differences in material or length.

Especially with Hemnes, it is important to use original parts to ensure guaranteed stability and safety.

Thanks again for your advice and quick feedback!

In addition to the previous discussion:

IKEA also offers replacement parts kits, some of which are specifically designed for Hemnes furniture.

If you frequently need replacement parts, investing in such a kit can be worthwhile. These kits contain the most common screws and fasteners in appropriate quality.

To determine the screw specifications:
- Outer diameter (M6, M8, etc.)
- Thread pitch (standard or fine thread)
- Screw length
- Head type (pan head, cylinder head, etc.)

Note: Some IKEA furniture uses metric threads, but occasionally also special threads. To avoid errors, it is important to measure with tools or compare with the original part.

It is crucial that replacement screws have the same tensile strength (e.g., 8.8 or, better, 10.9) to prevent deformation.
