Hello everyone, I am currently looking into purchasing an IKEA Hemnes piece of furniture, specifically a chest of drawers. I noticed that the Hemnes series comes in different color options, such as white, black-brown, and several wood finishes.

I am curious if anyone can share from personal experience whether there are differences in durability or longevity between these color variations. In other words, are there IKEA Hemnes finishes that are actually more durable or resistant in everyday use? Or are all surfaces roughly equally robust, so the choice can be made purely based on appearance?

I ask because I value material quality and long-term use when it comes to furniture, not just looks. If anyone has tips on caring for the Hemnes finishes, that would also be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Generally, all Hemnes variants are similarly sturdy, as they are made from solid wood. The surface treatment makes the difference: white lacquer is more prone to scratches than the darker colored lacquers or stains.

I am happy to provide a more detailed answer: The IKEA Hemnes series typically uses solid wood and various surface finishes. White painted versions may occasionally show small scratches after several years, which can be difficult to repair. Darker shades or oiled surfaces often hide minor signs of wear better, depending also on how much light and use the furniture receives.

Care is also important: Regular wiping with a damp cloth, avoiding excessive moisture, and direct sunlight exposure will extend the lifespan of all versions.

In summary: It is true that there are differences in appearance and the visibility of wear, but fundamentally all versions are sturdy. The durability ultimately depends greatly on care and handling.

I completely agree. I have had my Hemnes dresser in black-brown for almost five years now. While it shows some minor signs of wear, this is more due to my family’s use than the color itself. You have to take everyday life into account. White would probably be more prone to damage in our household, which is why I deliberately chose the darker option.

I think when choosing Hemnes furniture, you should consider not only the color but also where it will be used. White looks great and makes the room feel brighter, but it’s quite delicate when it comes to stains and scratches. Dark brown or wood finish is more forgiving – you could almost compare it to coffee: white is like a latte macchiato, looks nice but stains easily, while dark brown is more like an espresso, sturdy and low-maintenance. 😄

But seriously, the quality is solid across the board, with no major differences in durability, just in how they handle daily use. And, of course, personal lifestyle plays a big role here.

So, I would say: choose the color that better fits your way of living and household.

In short: No, the longevity hardly differs between the color options. Only scratches are more noticeable on lighter surfaces, but the material quality remains the same.
