RensoHello everyone,
I am currently looking into making our IKEA Besta system childproof, as we will soon have a small child at home. Since the Besta series is very versatile and consists of shelves, cabinets, and sideboards, I am particularly interested in which child safety products can be specifically attached to Besta furniture.
I am thinking of various options such as magnetic door and drawer locks, outlet covers, or possible edge and corner protectors that can be easily mounted on the smooth surfaces and edges of Besta.
Does anyone have experience or recommendations? It is also important to me that the safety devices can be removed with minimal residue and do not disrupt the simple design of the furniture too much.
Are there any products that are especially suitable for Besta or tips for installation? I am also curious about how durable these systems are in everyday use, since children can be very persistent.
Thanks in advance for your feedback and suggestions!

Hello Renso,
Some time ago, I also considered childproofing IKEA BESTA furniture and can share a few tips with you:
- Magnetic door and drawer locks: I recommend those from manufacturer A (anonymous), which are unlocked with a small magnetic key and are almost invisible when installed inside. They work very well because the smooth surfaces of the BESTA units are ideal for them.
- Mechanical latch locks: These are often more affordable but can be more visible and may affect the appearance. For BESTA, it’s best to install them on the inside to preserve the look.
- Edge and corner protectors: Absolutely essential with children, as the sharp corners of BESTA modules can quickly become a hazard. There are self-adhesive silicone corner guards that are easy to apply and can be removed without leaving residue.
- Outlet covers: If there are electrical outlets on or near the BESTA unit, removable outlet covers are a good option, as they simply plug into the existing sockets.
It’s important to prepare well for installation and clean the surfaces beforehand to ensure the adhesive strips adhere properly.
Summary:
1. Magnetic locks for doors/drawers
2. Silicone edge protectors
3. Outlet covers if needed
The magnetic locks are definitely durable when installed correctly. The SMART solution with the magnetic key is especially effective at preventing children’s access.
I hope this helps you!

Regarding child-friendly safety systems for IKEA BESTA, I can add:
- Magnetic drawer locks are ideal because they are installed inside and do not alter the appearance of the furniture.
- There are universal child safety locks with adhesive strips that are easy to apply and can be removed later without leaving any residue.
- For furniture with sharp corners, I recommend soft corner protectors, as they are relatively inexpensive and effectively prevent injuries.
In general, you should ensure that the adhesive is of high quality so that the locks cannot be easily removed by curious children.

In general, you should make sure to use high-quality adhesive so that the locks can’t be easily removed by curious little hands.I agree with that, but I also think it’s important to recognize that these systems are always just a temporary solution. Children learn quickly, and eventually, the lock might become more of an invitation to break in rather than a real obstacle.

Personally, I believe that alongside the technology, the environment should also be child-friendly. So the focus shouldn’t only be on individual pieces of furniture but on the overall setup. Still, such locks are definitely a good first step and better than nothing.
