Hello everyone,

I have a specific question regarding the IKEA Brimnes furniture system, particularly about its maximum load capacity. I am planning to purchase a dresser from the Brimnes series and would like to know how much weight the piece can safely support – not only the static load capacity per compartment but also the total weight that can be placed on the surface without concern.

I am also interested in whether the load limits differ between individual shelves or drawers and what factors (material, wall mounting, etc.) might influence this. Safety is especially important to me, as I intend to store heavy items.

Does anyone have detailed information or personal experience with the load capacity of Brimnes? Are there official specifications from IKEA or practical insights from users?

Thank you in advance!

The maximum load capacity of the IKEA Brimnes dressers depends on several factors, including the material and construction. According to official IKEA information, the load capacity for the shelves is usually around 15-20 kg per compartment (33-44 lbs). For the entire dresser, a maximum load of approximately 60-80 kg (132-176 lbs) is often specified, with the weight evenly distributed.

It is also important to note that most Brimnes models are designed for wall mounting to improve stability and prevent tipping. Therefore, safety through wall attachment should definitely be observed.

If you plan to store heavy items, it is advisable not to fully utilize the maximum load of individual drawers or shelves and to consider additional supports or alternative solutions for heavier loads.

I would like to explain a bit more technically to better clarify the load-bearing capacity of the Brimnes system.

The Brimnes series uses coated particleboard with a thickness of approximately 15 mm (0.6 inches), and the side panels are generally reinforced. The load capacity of the individual shelves is, as mentioned, around 15-20 kg (33-44 lbs). This is because particleboard tends to bend easily under point loads.

The wall mounting serves not only as a safety measure against tipping but also effectively increases the load capacity, since the furniture is secured and cannot wobble or shift sideways due to weight forces. Without wall mounting, a significantly lower maximum load should be expected.

Additionally, the drawers in the Brimnes range are typically designed for loads of about 10-15 kg (22-33 lbs); while the drawer slides are sturdy, they are not a heavy-duty system.

If you plan to store very heavy items, it is worth considering whether the load can be distributed across multiple compartments or if furniture made of solid wood or metal might be more suitable.

Could you please specify how you intend to use the chest of drawers? That would help in providing more precise recommendations.

Could you maybe specify exactly how you plan to use the dresser?

Sure, thanks for asking. I plan to use the Brimnes dresser mainly for heavier books and binders, around 5-10 kg (11-22 lbs) per compartment. Additionally, a large flat-screen TV weighing about 15 kg (33 lbs) will be placed on top, along with occasional decorations.

Since the dresser will also serve as a TV stand in part, the load-bearing capacity of the top surface is very important to me. Wall mounting is not a problem; I have the appropriate anchors and tools.

What I am particularly interested in is how stable the structure really is with wall attachment under these conditions, and if there are any user experiences regarding its durability under these loads.

That is doable. Important:
- Do not overload the drawers (max. 15 kg (33 lbs))
- Avoid loading the shelves with more than 20 kg (44 lbs)
- Secure the dresser to the wall

This will keep the furniture stable and safe.

I have had a Brimnes dresser in my living room for about 2 years and use it similarly to you – for books, folders, and my TV also sits on it (around 14 kg (31 lbs)). The only thing I want to emphasize is the wall mounting. Mine was fully secured to the wall, and IKEA includes a special kit for this.

In practice, I haven’t noticed any sagging of the shelves, even after extended use. The drawers still operate very smoothly. It’s important to distribute the weight evenly and avoid overloading individual compartments. So, your planned 5-10 kg (11-22 lbs) per compartment should be no problem for the piece of furniture, even in the long term.

Personally, I wouldn’t exceed the maximum load limit to prevent possible micro-cracks in the joints.
