Hello everyone, I’m currently dealing with a somewhat specific issue: I own an IKEA KALLAX shelving unit where some of the connectors (such as screws and plastic fittings) were lost or damaged after several moves or extended use. My question is: Does anyone know of good replacement parts that can be found directly at a hardware store and are compatible with KALLAX? I am mainly looking for screws, dowels, or corner connectors that can be installed easily but remain sturdy enough to keep the shelf structure secure. Any tips on material quality or specific brands would also be great, as I want to minimize effort without risking damage to the shelving components. Has anyone had experience with alternative parts from a hardware store, or do I need to order the complete set of accessories from IKEA? Thanks in advance for any advice.

Normally, hardware connectors from the hardware store do not fit IKEA furniture exactly. However, screws from the hardware store can usually be used if they have the same dimensions. I would still recommend buying corner brackets original from IKEA.

Basically, IKEA uses very specific dowels and connectors with KALLAX, mostly so-called Minifix corner connectors and tension fasteners with precisely matched dimensions. At a hardware store, I would look for screws with a diameter of 4mm or 5mm (about 0.16 or 0.20 inches), which roughly correspond to IKEA’s. It’s important that the length and thread profile fit, otherwise the material may split or the joint may fail. Metal corner connectors from hardware stores can be more stable, but they are usually larger and not hidden once installed. A tip: check if you can find replacement connector sets through online shops—some sellers offer custom-fit reproductions made of metal or plastic that are more durable than the original IKEA parts. To be absolutely sure, measure the connector position holes carefully, as they have very tight specifications. Have you already figured out which parts are missing exactly? For example, what screw length is needed or what type of connector?

Unfortunately, this is an oversimplified view. IKEA uses special chipboard connectors that cannot simply be replaced by standard screws without losing stability. Relying on hardware store screws risks a wobbly structure or damage to the wood.

I also consider that the safer option. Hardware stores generally lack the specialization to provide precisely fitting replacement parts for furniture designed for a specific connector system.

Thanks in advance for the initial assessments.

@Palenar: What I’m mainly missing are the plastic wall anchors and the Minifix dowels, not the screws themselves. The shelf still holds up well with the remaining parts, but I wouldn’t trust it under heavier loads anymore.

Are there any alternatives to these wall anchors or Minifix connectors available at hardware stores? Or are they generally so specialized that you can’t find anything with a similar function and size? Unfortunately, I can’t take a large variety of items to try out on my next trip, so a recommendation for a specific brand or by-name product would be very helpful.

If that’s not possible in general: How reliable is IKEA’s service for ordering replacement small parts? Is reordering these parts generally practical?

The plastic dowels and Minifix connectors from IKEA are proprietary and specifically designed for the material used in their furniture panels. Although you can find dowels in hardware stores, these are usually conventional wooden dowels or those intended for solid wood, which do not fit the Minifix holes.

Practically, there are two options:

1. Order IKEA replacement parts: IKEA offers a reliable spare parts service, available online or through customer service. The parts are affordable and precisely matched, ensuring the stability of your furniture. Delivery usually takes only a few days.

2. Alternative connectors: Some specialized shops offer metal connectors and expanders compatible with Minifix, which tend to be more durable. However, these are not available at typical hardware stores and require accurate measurements in advance.

For installation: Make sure the drilled holes are not damaged. Without the correct expander parts, it is difficult to achieve a stable connection using standard dowels, as the holes for KALLAX units are often quite narrow.

In short: For long-term stability, I recommend ordering the original replacement parts. Hardware store alternatives are usually either too coarse, too small, or do not fit the KALLAX configuration precisely.
