ElkinHello everyone, I am planning to paint some IKEA Platsa shelves in color to better match my living space. Now I am wondering if this is even possible without the paint peeling off later or looking unattractive. Does anyone have experience with whether the surface of the Platsa shelves is suitable for painting? I am especially interested in tips on surface preparation, which types of paint are appropriate, and any specific issues to watch out for. I look forward to your opinions and experiences!
First of all: The most important step is preparation. The melamine surface of the Platsa is very smooth, and it is crucial to roughen it properly so that the paint adheres. I recommend lightly sanding the surface evenly with 240-grit sandpaper. You should avoid sanding too aggressively to prevent damaging the decorative layer. Then, apply a special adhesion primer designed for smooth surfaces. After that, acrylic paint or a solvent-based alkyd paint is suitable. It is important to allow sufficient drying time and work in several thin coats to achieve a good result. So yes, it is possible, but it requires patience and the right materials.

Does anyone have experience with whether the surface of Platsa shelves is suitable for painting? Why wouldn’t it be? This melamine surface is smoother than regular wood, but with proper sanding and priming, everything is possible. Many people overestimate the difficulties. Sure, it’s not like solid wood, but you shouldn’t be too cautious. If done properly, paint will adhere to Ikea furniture as well. The real question is whether it’s worth the effort, or if you might be better off buying something else right away.

If done properly, the paint also holds well on Ikea furniture. Thanks, that’s reassuring! What I’m still wondering is whether it’s better to use water-based or solvent-based paints, especially regarding the surface finish. Does anyone have preferences or practical experience with this?
