Hello everyone, I am planning to paint some IKEA Platsa shelves in color to better match my living space. Now I am wondering if this is even possible without the paint peeling off later or looking unattractive. Does anyone have experience with whether the surface of the Platsa shelves is suitable for painting? I am especially interested in tips on surface preparation, which types of paint are appropriate, and any specific issues to watch out for. I look forward to your opinions and experiences!

whether it is better to use water-based or solvent-based paints

I recommend water-based acrylic paints for furniture because they are less harmful to health and the environment, easier to apply, and simpler to clean up. Solvent-based paints are somewhat more durable but harder to handle and have a strong odor. Using a bonding primer beforehand is important regardless of the type of paint. Additionally, thoroughly degreasing the surface beforehand helps when using water-based paints.

Just do it! I painted my Platsa shelves with colorful acrylic paint, and they look great! Important: Sand well and don’t give up! Even if it’s a bit time-consuming at first, in the end you get the perfect piece of furniture exactly how you want it.

Smooth sand, apply primer, then 2-3 coats of paint. Done. The surface of Platsa is not ideal, but it works.

Just as an addition: When painting, always work in well-ventilated areas and thoroughly degrease the surface beforehand using alcohol. Otherwise, the paint will not adhere properly and bubbles may form.

One more tip: It’s better to apply several thin layers of paint rather than a few thick ones. This helps to avoid runs and achieves a more even surface. Be sure to observe the drying time between coats.

Exactly. And if possible, I also recommend lightly sanding with very fine sandpaper between the primer and the actual paint.
