I recently purchased an Ikea Platsa system and am quite satisfied with its flexibility and design. However, I am concerned about the surface, as I suspect it might be relatively prone to scratches. My question is: Are there effective ways to protect the Ikea Platsa surface from scratches that are both practical for everyday use and visually acceptable? I am thinking of special protective films, coatings, or other types of surface protection that other users might have already tried. It’s important to me that the protection is not too noticeable and is easy to clean. I look forward to hearing about your experiences and tips!
I can only share my experience: A few months ago, I applied a self-adhesive film to my Platsa. At first, I was skeptical about the appearance, but it is hardly noticeable and provides good protection. However, you need to make sure that the film is applied completely dust-free, otherwise bubbles will be visible.
In practice, Platsa surfaces mostly consist of melamine resin-coated particleboard. These come from the factory with a protective layer, but it is not particularly scratch-resistant. Protective films made of polyurethane or similar transparent hard coatings are the best option, as they mechanically protect the surface without affecting the design.
Clear lacquer is possible but can alter the color tone and gloss and requires an even application in a dust-free environment. Furniture waxes offer only minimal protection and are not a long-term solution against scratches.
For practical use, I recommend a professional protective film designed for furniture surfaces and, if needed, consultation at a specialty store. Simple films from general hardware stores are usually not suitable.

I have always found clear furniture protection films to work best. That is also my recommendation. Self-adhesive furniture protection films are functional and unobtrusive. It is important to choose ones with good scratch resistance and UV protection to prevent the film from yellowing or becoming brittle.

I think noah63’s question is very good because this piece of furniture is often underestimated in terms of its susceptibility to scratches.Exactly, and to clarify a bit more: The surface of Platsa is not fully painted but coated with a thin melamine foil. This foil is flexible but relatively thin, which means micro-scratches can form quickly.

Especially for furniture that is used daily or in households with children, protection is definitely advisable. Therefore, I would recommend using a protective film of medium thickness that is also elastic, so that movements in the furniture don’t cause immediate damage. DIY clear coats usually dry very hard and are more likely to crack when impacted.
Noah63, perhaps you could add whether the Platsa modules are mainly used for storage or also as surfaces for placing items?

Noah63, maybe you could add whether the Platsa modules are mainly used for storage or if they also serve as surfaces for placing items? Thanks for asking, kulau. Basically, I mainly use the Platsa units for storage, but I do occasionally place things on the top surfaces, such as small boxes, decorations, or sometimes a cup of coffee. So it’s a moderate everyday use that can certainly cause some scratches, but not heavy wear. For me, a relatively discreet and simple protective method would be ideal, one that doesn’t visually alter the furniture but increases its protection.
